What is the difference between a Super MD-TA and a Super M-TA Diesel? Also how much longer is the wheel base from an M and Super M-TA?
Just curious. Doc

According to Guy Fay's Internation Harvester Tractor Data Book the M has a wheelbase of 89 1/4" while the SM-TA has 99 3/4". The normal nomenclature is a SMD-TA. The SM-TA Diesel is just a farmer's way of referring to a SMD-TA.

I have seen pictures of both and if there wasn't a difference there would not be two sets of decals, right?

I have hear the one with the round Super MTA or Super MTA Diesel (one without the wing) is actually a TA delete... is that right ?
In practice, I never saw one marked TA without TA [u:e081fc399a]or[/u:e081fc399a] without the wing, but I guess they are out there.

To my knowledge, no basic difference, maybe a few parts superseded here and there as happens with all of them.

It's more a phenomenon like the As and Bs, with and without the Cultivision lettering.

Not mentioned in other posts is that the MD is 1 1/2 inches longer than the regular M. So the wheelbase on the MD is 90 1/4 inches. According to Guy Fay's data book, the MD-TA and the M-TA both have the same wheelbase. I guess IH took up the difference in the engine dimension someplace besides the wheelbase for the later tractors.

Even IH literature is all over the place on the wheel base specs. I measured the wheel bases at one time, may find a old post. Don't rmember exacly now. For the regular narrow front tractor the M used two different lower bolsters in production. That changed the wheelbase around 1/2 inch between the two types. Tractors with standard narrow front , M is around 89-1/4, MD is around 1-1/2 inch longer, and the SMTA gas and diesel is around 95-3/4 inches.

See note above. The answer to that part of your inquiry is, yes, sometimes it was as simple as a difference in the decals

(quoted from post at 15:39:19 02/08/11) I have seen pictures of both and if there wasn't a difference there would not be two sets of decals, right?

Wrong.

The SMD-TA or SMTA Diesel, however you want to call it, was only made for one year, and then not very many of them were made...

About the only thing IH had time to change was the decals, if that.

Many of the aftermarket decal sets you see were designed from scratch, based on pictures, or rough guesses when pictures weren't available. They're not always correct.

I suspect that the decals you see where it says "Super MD-TA" on the circle/wing is incorrect. I believe it should say "Super M-TA" with a separate "DIESEL" decal.

Correct -- Both the Standard version and the row crop do not have a D in the decal on the hood, "Diesel" is a separate decal. This is Guy Fays letter series book, which I assume to be correct. So both decals say Super M-TA or Super W6-TA.

I think there is a little less then a foot extra length on the SM-TA then a straight M or Super M. Don't know about the MD or Super MD as I don't have either. My SM-TA is longer then my M and I think the main difference is due to the addition of the TA section between the engine and transmission. I assume the MD and SMD have the same component with the TA. There was a thread a year or two ago about the hood length and I measured them on my tractors and the SM-TA was longer but don't recall by how much, Hal.
