Hi all

I'm hoping someone who has done this before wrote down the info...

I am renewing four bearings and a seal in the transmission of my M. Description and IH part number follow. What I need is the brand and designations of bearings that will interchange with these, and are available at a bearing distributor.

1. Item 32 Transmission main shaft ball bearing p/n ST 297

2. Item 72 Transmission main shaft pilot bearing p/n 43 357 D

3. Item 42 Transmission driving shaft rear ball bearing p/n ST 203

4. Item 45 Transmission driving shaft front ball bearing p/n ST 239

5. Item 48 Transmission driving shaft oil seal p/n 43 359 D

Thanks for the help!

Jerry

In the old days IH made some of their own bearings, and you guessed it dealer only deal. Some of the ST numbers are just that . Now I would think since then they would be available from a vendor like SKF or such.

when you go to the brg. dist. he has all that info at his finger tips. all you need is an old brg. or give him the brg. spec's.

Here are the SKF numbers for three of your bearings and seal.

ST 297 crosses to 6311-J

ST 203 crosses to 309-J

ST 239 crosses to 208-NRJ

43359D crosses to 20702

Take the old bearings and seals to your parts store and they can find a replacement for you.

Take them to Napa. My local Napa has a book to cross them over. I think the 3 ST numbers are good now, the other 2 Im not sure on other than going to dealer and paying more for the same bearing, in some cases. Distributor will , or should be able to cross those numbers, but take the bearings and seal with you.

IH made a lot of bearings, ball and tapered roller, needle I think. They didn't make the flat roller in many sizes so they bought them from Bower I guess. They had the IH logo for many years but changed it to WP representing the West Pullman IH plant at Chicago as John Deere sure didn't want to have a bearing saying IH on it when they bought bearings from them. Bolts etc same thing.(not Deere so much, mostly others).

I started looking for item 72 last fall, Nappa couldn't cross it and another old time parts house in town that can usually find anything can't find that.

IIRC, thats the one that goes up inside, what I call the input shaft, and the front of upper drive shaft goes in the bearing? Ill get in contact with my parts guy hopefully today, and see if he can find it again. I think the number crossed to another bearing number like 69697 which he was able to cross to a Timken number. I do remember it was only a few bucks more than Case Ih, but hes on the way home, and Case Ih is 40 miles away!

Just noticed a old packing slip a few weeks ago, from when I ordered the main shaft bearing and the race in 08 that goes in the input shaft.
If I don't have the numbers switched the bearing was BU-5205 and the race was 5205-Z. Think they were Hyatt brand.
Not much cheaper than CIH. though.
Other bearing numbers IH used for # 72 maybe you can find one that can be crossed. Bower MU 5205 CL, Aetna RK 5205 L, Hyatt A 5205 TS .
Numbers depend on you having a transmission main shaft with a bolt retaining the bearing.

Yes, thats the one. It is in the worst shape of the four in my case - all the rollers were gone, all I have is the inner and outer races.

Thanks for helping
