Donaldson ball jar pre-cleaner

How was the donaldson ball jar pre-cleaner an upgrade to the original equipment? Did it just gather more material out of the air, is it designed for a special conditions such as grain chaff?

Of course I think they look cool - so I picked one up and installed it on my H last weekend. I was standing back and admiring it when my brother asked how much I paid for it and why it is any better.

I explained to him that it was less than $100 and it will pay for inself in a year or so in reduced dirt in the carb and reduced cylinder sleeve wear due to dirt. I can tell by the way he smirked he didn't believe me. Hell, I don't believe it either but it looks cool!

You've got the right idea, sorta. Donaldson has gone through several more generations of design since those were made, but the idea is still the same as those high-falutin' household vacuum cleaners with tanks on 'em instead of bags.

A focused cyclonic action keeps the air moving toward the conventional filter, but allows the heavier stuff (chaff, coarse heavy dust . . .) to fall into the jar. That's the stuff that can clog up the conventional part of the filter in short order, and can be the very devil to clean out.

So, on the sorta part, it may do a little but not a lot to reduce the fine stuff introduced to the regular filter, but is more to trap the coarse stuff that would clog the filter and starve your motor for air.

I assume you have the tiny toy JD in your jar?

I tend to run with the Minn. Moline crowd, so I plan to stick a small yellow tractor in the jar. Or maybe a picture of my least favorite politician ...

Here is the newer version. It does the same thing, but for only about $40 brand new.
