Farmall H Front Wheel Wobble

Next ptoblem with the old H is front wheel wobble. It wobbles and shakes REAL bad in 5th gear on the highway, going to town. Recommendatins? Thanks.
 
Make sure the nut on top of the gear is tight. You may also turn the gear 180 degrees so it's on a spot that isn't as worn. The bearing on the worm shaft could also be bad. My 400 was flat dangerous going down the road because it shook so bad. I turned the gear and put in a new bearing and it is like new now. The worm gear bearing number comes up as some weird $150.00 bearing but I replaced mine with a 6207 (pretty sure that's the right number) motor bearing for a couple bucks.
 

The bushings are are all totally worn out in the front bolster. The only way to fix it right is to replace those bushings, and you most likely will also need to build up the worn areas on the bolster shaft. Do it the right way and you will be rewarded with a tractor that is a pleasure to drive.
 
It's usually a combination of several wear points.

The gear fit on top of the shaft is usually a little loose. May need a beer can shim to tighten it up.

The gear teeth are a little loose. Not much you can do about this one unless you spend a LOT of money. New sector gears are close to $400 if you can find them, and the worm gear on the steering shaft is NLA.

Both bushings inside the steering post are definitely worn. You need to drop the vertical steering shaft out of the tractor, and replace those along with the seal that's in the bottom so it will hold oil.

Sometimes you can get them toned down to an acceptable level just by tightening the fit of the sector gear on the vertical steering shaft.

Running one tire a little soft is also a temporary fix.

Running one tire a little soft also makes for some difficult steering. I would never do that intentionally.
 
All the suggestions are right on track, but first have you checked your front wheels?
Check the wheels bearings and wheel mountings. If you spin the wheels do they run true?
 
Thanks, guys. I just went out to the shed and the wteering wheel will easily move about 8" back and forth (a little more than 1/8-turn.)
Which of these ideas would it probably be first??

Check the universal joint on the steering shaft. Remember, after 50+ years things do get a bit worn.

Try jiggling the steering wheel with one hand while peering at the U joint. If the two shafts are moving together with no play then it is in the gearbox area. I had about 1/4 turn of play in mine and fixed it by taking off the big cap on the front of the steering gearbox and putting a big washer inside it so that the worm gear was restricted from traveling back and forth. At first it was too tight, so I ground a little off the face of the washer and then it was fine. Make sure you get the big cap really tight when you put it back on, mine fell off once after a month or two and I lost the steering completely.

Also make sure the two locating collars at the steering shaft pedestal are snug up to the pedestal and have the proper set screws in tham a so they are not moving.

Thanks all. I wasn't the one to posted the question. However, my H tends to wobble a little at time. Now I know where to start in fixing it.
 
I had the same issue with my H a few years ago. Did all the steps that the above mentioned. All said and done, check the tire pressure in BOTH tires. I had one tire about 1/2 the pressure as the other. Pumped the equal and I am back on the straight and narrow! Sounds too easy but it"s the first thing to check.
