head gasket change

I am changing a blown head gasket and cannot find the timing mark T . ther is a 0 and a bunch of marks then 10. Turner flywheel c/w until static timing marks on inj. pmp. lined up then removed head. Number 1 piston was app. 3/8 in. below top of stroke. Turned f/w until piston at top, cleaned up and check for warpage all ok. Put head on and put rods back in. # 1 intake and # 4 intake and exhaust rods app 3 inches too high all others ok. Tried to tap them down with block of wood and hammer. no luck there. turned f/w 2 rev. until t/m lined up on inj. pmp. again stii no gosame rods high.what do I need to do. it is -30 up here and want spend as little time outside as possible. Thanks for any and all help Russ
 
What engine are you talking about, you must mean push rods are too high which would indicate tappet is out of bore or push rod not in tappet. Not all tappets can come out though so would need to know what engine.
 
The tappets in a 282 can definetly pull out of the bore in the block when you pull push rod out. That is the only thing I can think of that would cause your push rod to be too high or low. If tappet is all the way out the push rod will go down too far so it must be up and cocked. It is pretty hard to do much down the little hole in head where push rod goes through. Probably can see down there to verify problem but have to pull side cover off to get them back in place.
The trick is to jiggle those push rods when pulling them out so they let go of the tappet. Good luck.
 
Exactly what Pete says. I recently changed mine (282) and didn't remove the side cover (at first). In my case I had actually pulled the lifter out of the bore and it was sideways causing a short pushrod length. It was resting against the cam which would have sucked if I had started it that way.
Moral of the story always pull the sidecover to check the lifters/tappets. Oh yeah, always have a crane available, I manhandled the head on mine and just about had a hernia before it was done.
 
Its a done deal took inspection cover off dropped lifters back down the hole torqued the head down set clearances cold & hot running good now thanks for advice
