changing tires

I have an M that I take to some local pulls. I have a couple different sets of tires I want to try to use this year depending on where I am going. My question is, is it easier to change rim and cast center as a pair, or just the outer rim/tire? I ask because I have an extra set of cast centers sitting here that I could use if that route is easier. Like always, thank you for your advice!

Personally, I just change the tire with rim, leaving the cast center in place. This is really just due to the weight. If you have a way to handle the weight of a full assembled tire/rim/center, then you certainly have fewer bolts to deal with.

The wheel with the center in place is off balance and hard even dangerous to handle. Plus, the wedges are sometimes a bear to get lined up. Leave the center in the tractor. Good luck at the pull.

It's 6 bolts to change the rims vs. 4 to change the centers, but I'd much rather leave the centers on the tractor. I have found it to be much harder to get the centers alone off the axles than to get the rims off the centers.

I'm the opposite of popular opinion. I would swap centers and all long before I screwed with the wedges. It is a PITA to get the wheel straight if you are going to be doing it all the time. Then again maybe if you do it all the time you will get better at it.
The wheels and centers aren't that hard to move. They are a lot easier than just the centers.

(quoted from post at 09:48:43 02/07/11) I'm an old guy and not as strong as I use to be. I leave the center on and remove the rim.
That's the other difference between me and most of the guys on the forum. I am half of most posters age.

I can swap rims and tires about 5 minutes per side. But it takes me about 20 mins per side to do the rims and tires and centers. No doubt about it just doing the rims and tires is quicker and easier unless you have a reason to have to do both.

Wow, looks like this is shaping up to be an "to each his own". C'mon guys, either way works. I do the one my body and my available tools allows me to do.

so, if you will be working by yourself, and don't have a hoist or loader, I would just change the rims. If you have help, and/or a hoist or loader, take the whole thing off.

I do know that I abused my body as a young man doing things that weren't all that smart.......I am paying for it now with more aches and pains than I can shake a stick at.

so, to each his own....................

I presume you mean you have two sets of tires mounted on rims. I would just change the rim and tires assembly, it's much easier to handle just the rim and tire than the rim'tire and cast center. There's only 6 clamps to deal with and centering the rim on the center is not all that hard, just equal space the rim in 3-4 places around the center and gradually tighten up the lug clamp nuts evenly. Don't ever loosen the inner clamps held by the through bolts. If you're gonna change tires on the rims do it with the rims and centers mounted on the tractor...just handle the tires.
