Super C Clutch Override Bendix Starter Gear

Quite some time ago, I purchased the new type of starter Gear for a Super C. It seems I have lost the instructions as I just have the new part in the box. I took the old starter out today and removed the old style Bendix. The new Bendix part, which is all one piece, does not want to slide on to the shaft because there is a set screw that does not retract. The starter shaft is completely round and the set screw cannot be retracted because it doe not clear an outer sleeve on the starter. It covers about 1/2 of the screw. It doesn not appear that the sleeve is removable. There is probably an obvious way to do this, but I am not seeing it. I don"t want to damage anything. How do I get the new gear to slide on? Is the set screw supposed to align with where the old Bendix threads into the shaft? Any help is appreciated. I hope I don"t have the wrong part.

The part that covers the screw is spring loaded. Push it back enough to get the screw backed up. You will know what to do next.

I am getting nowhere on this. Does it require a lot of pressure to retract the spring, like more than can be applied by hand? Do I need to slip a pipe over it to retract it? If I put downward pressure on the outer flange, it wants to close the top piece down to where it could not be retractable.Do I need to put it in a vice to retract it? Thanks.

You have to push down on that washer evenly because it will bind up before it moves far enough if you just push it down near the set screw. I sometimes have to pry it the last bit in order to get the screw free to come out. I usually just stick a screw driver in each side and then twist until it moves enough. Once the screw is backed out you can remove the screw driver as the screw will hold apart

Dang. All that trouble and it won't start. It sounds like something is binding up. I wish I had just bought the original parts. Is there anything else to adjust in order to get it to work properly? It sounds like it is kind of grinding, like it is not matching up properly.

What are the ring gear teeth like? If the ends are mushroomed over from the old drive grinding on it that be be the problem.

As far as the starter goes, the drive must spin out freely on the splines. That type of starter depends on inertia to get the drive to extend into the ring gear so it is important that the starter also starts to turn very quickly. If it is slow to get to speed it can also cause the drive not to engage the teeth properly.

I got it to start after hooking on the battery charger and using the 200 amp boost. The starter rumbled though like the end gear was not disengaging. I shut it down. Is there a trick to getting it to retract? I pulled out the starter and the gear is spun out and it is staying out on the end. Here is a photo. The ring gear is worn. Should the ring gear be replaced?

I am fairly sure this new gear just toasted the starter. It started the tractor with the jumper cable. It sounded like the starter was being spun by the ring gear. There was a loud ca-chunk. I shut it down and removed the starter. I guess it was defective. I'll try to get it off the shaft and then will see if the shaft will spin. If it will, I'll order the original parts. If it won't, I'll have to get a new starter.

Here is what I have. The new gear seems to have come apart. It also busted the windings loose inside the starter.
