what is a good price for a super m that runs good and has a 3 pt hitch on it. I"m looking to buy one and the man is asking $3000.00 for it. He said he painted it. The year is a 53. The paint job doesn"t look that good. thanks

Hi jojo1,
It depends on a number of things like:
* How good are the tires
* How good are the rims
* How good do the hydraulics work
* Does it sound good when running/under load
* Are there wheel weights
* Are there implyments
* Are there any oil leaks
I have seen plenty of Farmall SM's for a lot less.
Bob

Paint usually doesn't have alot of weight, at least with me anyway. Most are 50 footers at best, unless it's a true show tractor. Tires are the big factor here. New tires will add $1000 to the price of the tractor, regardless of the tractor's condition. New Saginaw 3pt's are around $700-$800 last I checked, if it is indeed a Saginaw, and not a homemade 3pt. A few variables to consider and obviously we can't see or hear the tractor. Hard to say as some areas have more demand than others, and prices will reflect that. The other problem is, people will pour $6000 into one and expect to recoup their investment. I'd say it's pretty close in price though. See if he'll take $2500. Shawn

$1500 is closer to it, unless it has very good tires, maybe $2000. Best to stay away from "repainted" tractors, all the paint does is cover defects such as leaking seals, etc, and replaces them with a lousy paint job. Unfortunately for the buyer, the
"repaint" often works.

Not sure where you're located, but where I'm at, $1500 will get you a decent Straight M, but as soon as you say Super, the price jumps. Shawn

the 3pt is a saginaw and the tires look new. He said the 3pt would pick the back of the tractor up. I'm in Indiana and the tractor is in Illinois. thanks

$3000 ain't bad for the tractor as you have described it. Watch some auctions to see how they go. I see about any Super M go for no less than $1500 even for a junker. A Saginaw hitch is almost $800 last time I looked. Tires are over $800 there. So at $3000 you are getting a deal. Now you should offer him $2500 and maybe get a steal on it.

Biggest thing is drive it and make sure everything is tight an all the gears sound good and not growly. Doing a rear end can cost over $1000 to do one right.

If mechanically good and good rubber on the rear, it is in the ballpark of "fair" both ways. If the rears are wore out, then knock at least $750 -$1000 off.

No fenders, has all lights and a TFE. Which type of air breather did they come with and what compression should it have if its stock. thanks guys, sorry for all the questions, I'm new at this.
