Hi I am looking at this 1566 Farmall and was wondering if it is worth the 9800.00 they are asking for it. The tractor has triple remotes on the rear, factory cab but the cab is in rough shape so I really think it is going to need some work as it is missing the door on the left hand side and the side panel that contains the model # on the left side is missing as well. It looks like on the tie rods someone had welded the steering arms together but other than needing a paint job it look ok. I really don't know of any weak points with the 1566 other than T/As can go bad on them if they're overworked. Thanks

Hi Gordo,to answer your question a 966 or a 1066 would be fine only I have not seen one come up for sale locally as older tractors and machinery for sale are getting too scarce to buy.Im in upstate NY and its getting tougher to find a 66 series Farmall in our area. Thanks

If the cab & other stuff hasn't been taken care of, the rest of the tractor probably has been neglected as well. Probably oil & filters not changed regularly--air filter neglected--& so on.

If you would like a 966 black stripe or a 1066 or a regular 966 you could drive to messicks in elizibethtown pa. They have a web site www.external_link just tryin to help

Simple answer. NO. These tractors were not IHs best effort. You would be much better served with a 9,10, or 1466. I guess if you could buy it really cheap you might be okay. Does the TA work? How is the clutch? Does it have a coolant filter and when was the last time it was changed? Other fluids and filters? Has it ever been overhauled? Does it smoke much? What condition are the tires in? With a big tractor like that you can run into some really big expenses after you get it home. It would have to be a real cherry for me to give $8000 for it. You can usually find a really nice 1066 for $9000. I would be patient and keep looking.

NO! It would have to be a real cherry for me to give it more than a passing glance.
And if you plan on doing any haying with it, you WILL miss having 8 gears. Second is faster in them, too, so you would likely end up hating the 6 speed. The 15 worked good for us on the chopper, but we ran the diskbine with it one time, in heavy hay it was OK, but when it was lighter and you could pick up hi-2 with the 1066, you couldn't because hi-2 in a 15 runs about 2-3 MPH faster than a 10 or 1466. It's great for heavy tillage, too. But for an all-around tractor, not so much.
Mind you, we also had the fuel cranked right to ours, on a cool still night chopping, it would send a plume of black smoke straight up through the hi-tension lines, and leave a smoke trail around the field.

My father inlaw sold his 1586, not 1566, in 2006 for 9,500.00, good paint, motor, HD TA, cab and duals. Now this is the 86 series not 66 but same transmission and hp. Pulled a 25ft CIH disc easy. Only thing the gears really sucked. Too much space in between lo 3rd and hi 1st and hi 2nd. Seemed a lot slower on the road than my 1486 as well but it had POWER.

It was. Second gear in a 15 is faster than in the smaller tractors, and third gear is about the same as third in the smaller ones.
