Super MTA fast hitch

Saw the local 3rd generation IH dealer get into a discussion with the owner of a nice late serial # SMTA--- faded red paint and worn a bit but claimed to be original--- at the local tractor show concerning this issue. The IH dealer said they never were sold with the fast hitch--- and the tractor owner said his uncle bought it new at that very dealership with the FH on it. The IH dealer wrote down the uncle's name and went back to the dealership and about 2 hours later appeared back at the tractor show with the original factory invoice from 1954 for that serial # and the paperwork showing the uncle bought it, and, showing that it did indeed come from the factory with the fasthitch on it. The dealer apologized and gave the owner the invoice.

Guy Fay would be the one to ask about how many came that way, but it had to be darn few.
 
From what I understand is that the SMTAs did not come with factory installed hitches, but the 450 style hitch could be installed or the 400 style if the transmission top cover was replaced with one from a 400. Maybe dealers installed some on SMTAs they still have in stock when the 400's came out.
 
This might be a "gray" area as far as the invoice is concerned. Everthing I have found out is that IH offered a fasthitch for the SMTA but was a "dealer installed" item that was shipped seperately with the tractor from the factory.Neighbor's dad ordered a SMD-TA that way.

I have a SMTA that I would like to put a fasthitch on & have asked this question & this is the answer I get most often. I have been told that a 400 fh wouldn't work, thay you meed a early 450 fh which doesn't make sense to me as the 400 followed the SMTA and originally was designed as a Stage IV SM, with the SMTA being a Stage III but with the change in sheet metal they decided to rebadge them as the 400s.

You might post over on "Red Power" forum as there are several well informed people there. Guy Fay posts there as does a "DWV" who seems to have a lot of technical information on the old IH tractors.

The "dealer-installed" but shipped with the tractor fast hitch would make sense as to why it was on the factory invoice. Thanks!

One of my IH friends poked fun at me and said he didn't believe what I told him I saw with regards to the factory paperwork. He said he could make a factory invoice on his computer for a Super HTA. (<---- I know I am going to regret even bringing that up on here.) But now I can tell him your bit of info regadring the dealer-installed item.
 
SMTA, 400 and 450 have the same transmission housing. SMTA has a different transmission top cover. 1956 was the first year for fasthitch with traction control that just bolts to the transmission housing and easy to install on a SMTA. First type fasthitch or 400 type also used parts that bolted to the top cover. There was no place to bolt the parts on a SMTA top cover. Also to work the way its supposed to the first type used two hydrualic cylinders and 2 valves to operate. Yes some have made plates or other things to go on a SMTA top cover or changed top covers to get the first type fast hitches to work. If a fast hitch got installed on a SMTA in 1954 I don't think IH factory had any hand in it.
 
I have two SMTA's with 400 style Fast Hitch. One with special plate to mount the rockshaft. The other one has a changed out rear frame lid.

Put a Fast Hitch on a W-400. That was a lot more difficult as I wanted to save all the platform sheet metal. Also put a 560 Fast Hitch on a 660. Easy as I removed the platform sheet metal.

Also have front Fast Hitches on the W-400 and a F-400. I bought the F-400 with only a horseshoe drawbar.

I mention all this because anything is possible when it comes to hitches.
 
Joe, I've got a fast hitch from a 450 on my MTA. Put it on myself. Piece of cake. I'm sure you could put a 400 one on an MTA, but that would take alot of fabrication work. 450 hitch is just a matter of turning bolts.

Is that "special plate" something that was available as a part from IH, or is it a "Wardner special plate?"
