Oil leak around filter bolt head

I have two tractors that just insist on leaking oil around the bolt that runs down through the center of the oil filter housing. One is a Super C and the other is a cub. I have tightened them to the point that I am worried about busting something. I even bought some drain plug washers with the little rubber gasket in the center to fit the bolt and that made it even worse. This has been going on a long time and I just now thought about asking if anyone else has delt with this.

Do you have the correct sealing washer under the bolt head, part # 13727D For the "C", # 25352D for the Cub (IIRC)?

There should be a copper washer between the bolt and canister. Bob posted the part numbers for them.

I bet not since I just got them at the auto parts store. There was no washer at all under them before. You may have solved my problem that quick. Where is the best best place to pick up the correct ones? I dont belive my H has one either but it does not leak. Thank you Bob.

I was JUST going to ask this question. I have a C that I've had for ab out 6 months now, changed the oil on it, and ever since then it's leaked right out of that top bolt on top of the canister. Mine does not have any washer, but it didn't have one when I took it apart, so I figured it wasn't susposed to. My H as well does not have a washer, and has never leaked. Weird.

You might need a different canister. I had that same thing happening on a 1940 H, and found that someone before me had been over-tightening that bolt and had actually distorted and worn down the hole where the bolt goes through. A different canister in GOOD shape solved the leakage problem.

Paul, I don't know who your closet CaseIH dealership is but those parts are probably still available as they are most likely used on a lot of IH tractors. I have been using Vestal Equipment in Bolivar for all my IH part needs as I'm treated very well there unlike most of the other dealership once I'm known as just another one of those letter series guys. Randy King is the parts manager there and their toll free number is 1-800-269-9904. Another person I've used there is Mike at the counter and there are a couple others as well and everyone is very friendly and helpful at the dealersip. They are also connected with the Parts Depot in Wisconsin where a lot of old stock obsolete parts are warehoused and can obtain items from there as well. Good luck and if your cannister is still good and not distorted the washer will probably fix your issue. Good luck and hope the snow wasn't too bad on you but probably was from what I heard from Jimmy King, Hal.

Thanks Hal. The snow along with the wind and low temps and this dang sinus infection I've been fighting have taken about all the fun out of the last week or so. -17 at my place yesterday morning. Even the old Super C didn't want to start in that. About 30 mins on the batt charger and she was good to go. Sure got cold fingers though.

Some of the automotive washers on oil pans are plastic. Take the lid off of a margarine container, cut it to fit around the bolt hole by 1/8th inch, cut the bolt hole and install, snug the bolt in,don't over tighten and that should end the leak. I even used a piece of inner tube to make one for a hydraulic filter,it doesn't leak anymore either.

I think that brass washer is included in a complete engine gasket set. Not saying you should go out and buy a whole gasket set just to get that washer, but I'll bet there is quite a few guys who never used that washer, so there should be a good supply of them out there somewhere.

Thick copper washers should be avail. from auto part stores. Nylon washers may work, but will tend to mush out at the canister when pulled down tight.

I agree W/ new washer and to check your canister. And maybe the bolt could be bent? Don't know how that would happen on the tractor, though.
I like to throw a heater on the oil pan when the temp. plummets that low. Best of luck to you with the leak , your health and for warmer weather!
You will get it, the 'ol iron is tough!
