49 farmall cub

I"ve been looking for a older tractor for a restoration project and I found a some-what complete 49 farmall cub for $300 and it"s yellow. Here is what the add said;

49 farmall cub. Very nice grill,hood,radiator.has manifold distributor air cleanerfenders draw bar front end really nice.what i see missing is caburator.starter and battery box. i dont see any welds or cracks on it.i have no idea if the motor is locked up or not say i will just say that it is.

Does this sound like a good deal for $300.00

Thanks for your input, Chris

Pretty tough to say it's a bad deal even though there is no picture !! The yellow is a good indicator it was used by a Hwy Dept or something similar. Jump on farmallcub.com and you'll find lots of good advice and links to parts supplers that are totally reliable. Sounds as if Ralph's Cubs in KY will be your best bet for good, used parts. Have fun. You have OVER $300 worth of parts in what you have listed, let alone to get the whole tractor.

If the block is not cracked, you should buy it and not look back. Cub's are one of the easier ones to find parts for. However, since they are the most collectable (at least it appears that way), the parts can get pricey for certain things.

As always, IMHO.

Thank you for your input!! I'm going to bring it home today and then first I will research what it will take to get it running. I'm thinking if the motor is stuck and/or if it needs to any parts I will part it out. Otherwise I will try my hardest to talk myself into bringing the cub back to life.

find the serial number tag. This should tell you if it was an industrial or not. Industrials were painted yellow originally and are very collectible. I would buy it either way though.

Grill does not look like what I am familiar with on a 49 Cub. Picture is kinda fuzzy but thinking there were grills like that on the late 1950's models. Don't recall any bars on early Cubs. I would still buy this tractor. Might turn out to be a diamond in the rough and a lot of money parts are there. Did you mention tires condition?

You have to rationalized these situations. You could pay $1800 for a running Cub and still have to put more money into it.
If you enjoy the project, you could put another $1500 into this one and know what you have.
Would you rather spend $1800 for an unknown or spend what it takes and know what you have when you're done.
If plan to make money, forget it. If you want to have fun, go got it.
I never loose money. If I come up short, I charge it off to an education.

for comparison, here is my '49 cub, as far as i know factory stock, i can see some pretty significant differences, not saying what you found isnt worth the 300, it probably is, but here is a complete one to compare
