Battery hookup 966 Negative on one to positive on other?

The left battery on my 966 has a short cable from the hot to the starter solenoid and a cable from the negative side to the positive on the battery on the right side of the starter. Is that right? I was looking at the batteries on my truck and each one of them has a ground cable and the hot sides are tied together.

The two batteries are probably 6 volts each. Thus in series 12 volts
Two 12 volt batteries are connected in parallel (as your truck is wired) to give 12 volts. The 6 volt batteries will have three cells each, not 6 Jim

That is correct unless someone has replaced the batteries with a pair of 12 volt batteries instead of the 6 volts type it came with.

Your tractor is connected in series. The two six volt batteries are connected to add the voltages together to get twelve volts. Your truck has two twelve volt batteries connected in parallel. That method add the amperage available but does not increase the voltage.

Alright, so if the batteries have 3 caps on top it has 3 cells and 6 caps 6 cells right? When hooking up jumper cables I was told to put the hot on the post that is connected to the starter and the negative on the post that is grounded to the frame.

What I always did was hook the positive to the post connected to the starter, then the negative to a bolt at the back of the frame rail. Accomplishes the same thing, and the cables will reach without having to use another set, or pulling them apart.

Be sure to attach the cables as the battery is marked. The word hot is only a reflection of the non ground side. We cannot say from here which is correct as we cannot look at the battery markings. Hook positive to positive---and negative to negative. Jim

The 66 was last tractors made with 2 6v batteries connected in series to get 12v, negative ground, then + on 1 battery & crossover cable to - post on other side, later cable was made longer to loop rearward across transmission away from starter to lessen chance of heat melting cable, 6v battery had more reserve cranking power, 86 started with 2-12v battries hooked in parallel.
