I am looking at a pro silo blower to work
on a smaller tractor (about 40 hp) to fill a
40' upright silo.I can get a good deal on a
New Holland model 28 but don't know
any possible alternatives.Thanks

Look at either an IH 48 or a NH 25. You might be alright with the 28 if your wagon meters to the low side with 40 hp. You won't be able to "put the coal to it" with something like a Badger 950 wagon if it is fully loaded. A NH 28 or IH 56 (both 56" fans) really want 60 plus PTO horsepower to utilize their capacity and I always liked having 100 PTO horsepower to make quick work of a load.
Both the IH 48 and NH 25 are getting to be a little rare so I would get started ASAP to find either as I would guess it will take some time to come across one.
Again, you may be alright with the 28 but you may find yourself spoon feeding it to avoid stalling the tractor.

Dont know an answer for you. We used to fill two 30 ft silos with a 44 M H 6 cyc. We also used a M farmall. The blower was a MM and a small IHC.The pipe was 6 in if I remember corectly. We blew corn and sorghum over the top. The 44 did a better job than the M. on the blower. The blowers were both belt driven. Sometimes it would choke the pipe if you fed it to heavy. Im not sure a 40 HP tractor would be big enough to do the job.I might be wrong and dont mean to upset anyone. Just trying to help.

Hi, we filled 30 ft silo with a JD blower but can"t remember the model but was PTO driven with 8 inch pipes using a B-414D (40 BHP) from IH and Gehl self unloading wagons. Again it depends on the condition of the blower, worn paddles, clearance distance to the drum and drier corn silage with lots of cob blows easier than very green corn with little cob.

We have run a Gehl high-throw with a M at our heifer barn to fill a 40' silo. Worked ok, a little slow but got the job done.

Blowers don't come up for sale often, so you gotta take what you can get.

The 28 will do just fine with a 40HP tractor. You won't set the world on fire, but you'll get the job done a lot faster than with that old ensilage cutter.

Dad used to blow haylage up a 72' Silo with a tired 450 gas and NH 28 blower. Not a record breaker, but got the job done. I would say you would be fine, especially if corn silage- Doug
