Weird Electrical/Lighting Issues

Hey fellas. I am having trouble with the headlights on one of my Super A's. I just re-wired the tractor and ran the headlight wiring. The test light shows the headlight connections to be "hot" when the switch is turned on (check). I hook the terminal up to the light (with new 12 volt bulb), and I get nothing. FYI, I have the glass lens off for testing. I use the test light to check power, and find that when I touch the reflector (bulb housing), it lights up the test light showing it is "hot". When I touch ANYWHERE on the reflector, the test light lights up. ALSO...when I touch the light post that the light is bolted to on the tractor, it shows that to be "hot" as well. Anything else I touch past the light post does not light up the test light.

I was assuming I had a bad ground, so I sanded down the top and bottom of the light post where it bolts to the light, and I am still having the same problem. ITS DRIVING ME NUTS!! THANKS.

Two solutions Remove the light post and clean/sand the surfaces it is bolted to or screwed into. Then clear coat the joint after reassembly.
OR
Run a ground wire parallel to the hot light wire and solder it to the reflector. Attach the other end to the tractor on a clean shiny bolt and clear coat it to prevent corrosion. Jim

How do the light posts mount to the Super A? I've never actually installed any on a tractor. What's the best way to remove them. From what I have said, do you all think the bad ground is in the connection of the posts to the tractor frame? The reason I'm asking is because we painted the tractor, BUT the light posts were already installed, so I wouldn't think they would have paint at the connection point. I really would hate to run a ground wire having that I like to have a clean look when it comes to wiring.

Pair the ground lead with the lead from the Light switch (usually inside the pipe of the mount. I am not sure what is mounting your light to the tractor, but they all can be removed. It could be as simple as removing one bolt, cleaning the threads and putting a star washer under the new shiny bolt head to make the connection. Jim

This is a Super A tractor with the standard headlight posts that stick out of either side in the front. I am not sure how they are fastened and/or removed. I do know that the posts are solid, and no wires can be ran through them.

I agree with the ground being the problem.

Your stems that the lights mount to are held in place by square-head set screws, one for each. Should be readily visible. You might try loosening them up, removing and cleaning up the stems if possible. And a shot of brake cleaner throught the open holes. At the very least roate them 180 and take a new bite with the set screws.

Any problem outside that is in the light housing or its mount as the others have described.
