IH 140: Smaller Diameter Steering Wheel & Seat Rail Chan

The late Hugh McKay spoke of extending and raising the seat rails as a means to create more space for big boys driving Farmall 140s. I can see how the seat rails can be extended backwards a bit and also raised (so as to not get into the hitch lift arms). How about a smaller diameter steering wheel for the 140, maybe a Super A sized steering wheel? Anybody know if this backwards retrofit can be done to an early series 140? I know this increases the steering effort, but my thinking is to improve my ability to get off the tractor both during normal circumstances and especially during dangerous situations. When I was a boy on the farm it was no big deal but as a more hefty 200 pound near 60 year old, that seat to steering wheel situation is more problematic.

I highly doubt that IH changed the steering shaft from the Super A to the 140.

Being considerably bulkier, and long-legged, I don't see a need to move the seat back... In fact if you did short-legged people might have problems pushing the pedals.

Been wondering about a smaller steering wheel myself. Great little tractor, but about the easiest way to get off is to fall off. Hope someone has an answer. Joe

I'm sure the answer is in the parts catalog. Look on the CaseIH web site if you don't have a hard copy.

I am pretty sure that all of the 140 tractors have the "splined" steering shaft instead of the "keyed" one used on the A/Super A/100/130. At least I know all of my 140's have the splined shaft, and I have a 1962 model (early style grille), and 4 others in the 70's (later style grille).

If you want a smaller steering wheel for the 140 just order one for a 656 or 686 they are the same size spline but the steering wheel is 2 inches smaller. It might be a little harder to steer. Erik..

Erik, thanks for this info about the 656 steering wheel. I am not a long-legged fellow, yet would find it hard to get off the tractor quickly in an emergency situation. The smaller diameter steering wheel would provide more clearance for jumping off. Having the seat further back would also provide more jumping off clearance.

Thanks,

Bill your not suppose to jump off. lol. I know what you mean i have a hard time getting of and on mine also. They werent built for big people or older people. The guy who desined them must have been a little guy.

I believe the 'C' had a splined wheel and it was fairly small in diameter. You might want to check that out also.
