An earlier post concerning exploding batteries got me to thinking.
Why aren’t all new batteries maintenance free?
Wouldn’t that eliminate the vapor explosions?
I have a maintenance free battery in my Case 1030D that has been in it for 8 years and the little light on top is still green and it starts fine.
I realize there are millions of used batteries and the economics in recycling and rebuilding them.

Question: Is the reason all new batteries are not manufactured maintenance free simply the bottom line profits.

Thanks,
Dell

Maintenance free is not SEALED.

They still gas off hydrogen.

I'm not even sure if sealed batteries are immune to this.

The reality is that battery explosions are NOT common, and are most often associated with poor maintenance habits and improper installations.

The first battery that blew up on me was a maint free batt. My fault, I knocked a tool off a fender onto the battery while working on the car. As changing my shorts and the battery I learned never to set tools near or on the battery. As stated Maint free still has vents. The 2nd batt that blew on me was just on the charger at 10 amp. I don't know what caused the spark, no one was near when it went. Now this is from about 1978 to now. During this time I was in the Army on tanks. 6 Batts per tank. After retiring I worked a few years as a mech. So I've been around a lot of batteries. It's not real common but it happens.

I have seen some batteries advertised as Sealed.

Dell yea you have. But I've never seen one that really is as far as lead/zink acids are concerned. What I've seen as sealed means that there is no way to add water to the battery buy the user or mechanic.

I've never used or been arounf the jell batteries so I don't know about them.

I do know that there are several people who grace the boards who know a lot more about batteries than I do. Hope one of them responds to this.

I remember back in the 70s J.C. Penney's came out with a battery that had a life time warranty on it. That ended up costing them big time. Bad thing was that when you brought a battery back for warranty they gave up a battery with a 60 month or so warranty. Guess they figured out there is no life time battery. Lots of batteries like your talking about do in fact end up with problems and still have to have a vent unless they are a gel type battery

My 20006 Buick Lucerne has a sealed and vented battery. It is under the back seat and has two vents on it. I just had it replaced and I think Delco is the only one making them so far. That eries is used in Buick Lucerne, Cadillac and the Hummer.
