farmall M gas tank mounting

Do all M's use springs for the gas tank mount?
What is the purpose of the spring and how is it installed. I have two m's (1951 and 1952) and neither has these springs on the gas tank mounting studs. The tanks do have a long rubber gasket on the rear support.

The isolaters, rubber bushings or springs are used to keep the tank mounting points from cracking and leaking. You figure gasoline at almost 8lbs a gallon is a lot of weight moving in the tank. With out the rubber mounts it would beat itself apart and leak.

An isolator (Synthetic rubber/cloth) pad buffers the tank at both ends from direct contact with the supports. Studs through fairly large holes are the fasteners. there is a washer-spring-washer-nut combination on each stud to compress the spring. This allows the tank to expand and contract at a different rate than the tractor under it without being stressed. It also allows easy alignment and assembly. There is also a strip of buffer between the tank and the hood for the same reason. The parts diagrams on line at caseih.com show the assembly clearly. Jim

Your tractors used a rubber washer or pad and a special steel washer below the tank mounts. From bottom of studs, nut, washer, pad, tank mounts on tractor, pad, tank. Use the cotter key type nuts and studs with pin holes or self locking nuts and don't snug the mounts all the way down.

Three springs (one on each stud) are shown on the diagram (scroll down on the tank illustration for brackets) Jim

If I read the parts book right the springs are only used up to SN FBK24214

Mine is a 1950 and the studs are 2 short to use springs.

I didn't know the SN. I would use cupped (bellville) washers to load the studs, but not clamp hard. (just me) Jim

No springs on yours, they quit using them a good while before your models. I was to lazy to look up exactly when. Should have made my other post clearer. On front of the tank the big pad goes between tank and support. On the rear a round pad goes between tank and support. Below supports a round rubber pad goes first then the special cup shaped washers and then the nuts on all three studs.
