504 grilles and future engine swap question

Can anyone tell the grille interchange on a 504 Farmall row crop T/A tricycle? Will a 706 or 806 fit? Can I buy one new or just used?
Is there a bigger, more powerful engine available to replace my C-153 gas engine with minimal headache? I will be tug pulling occasionally. Is changing eng. a good ideal? Mine oil smokes a little after it warms up.
For now only a repaint is in the forecast.
Thanks for help and input!!

The tin 504 RC grille is the same grille housing as used on the 404-2404 and 606-2606. The Row Crop version had a full grille insert. The utility series had headlights in the grille insert. There is a NEW 504 RC grille insert on E-bay right now. 656-706 grille housings are cast iron and taller. Will not work at all.

Unless you do a LOT of work, the C153 is it for engines.

IH didn't make that many 504's in the grand scheme of things, and they're not really the same as any other tractor... The 504 can't trace its heritage back to the A, C, H, or M.

If anything, it is descended from the 340, which was designed to fill the gap between the 240 (descended from the C) and the 460 (descended from the H).

The 544 came after the 504, but it has nothing in common with the 504, and the C200 engine is even rarer than the 504's C153.

The F-504 and 606 appear to me to be the same tractor with different engines and misc like wheels. The 606 uses the 236 cubic inch six cylinder. There is alot of empty space between the F-504 engine and the radiator.

That 236 engine will swap with the six cylinder 263, 282, 301 engines. May have to change the front gear cover and/or water pump depending on which tractor or combine the replacement engine comes out of. Combine engine may not be drilled for clutch pilot shaft. Probably have to use 504 flywheel which may need to be re-drilled for the six cylinder crankshaft.

Seeing as no one else on this forum has offered advice on this subject, call Mike Bunck at Steel Wheel Ranch and get his opinion on what can be done.
