I am in need of some info.
I am looking at buying a Super M for a man in my area. It has got some damage to the bell housing (broken out bolt holes inside) I have 2 M's already. I am wanting to know if there is a differance in the housing from the M to the Super M.
Thanks,
J.R.

They are different. The starter (If I Recall Corectly) has three bolt mounting. The remaining differences are cosmetic, and I think they can interchange. The SM will have a modified belly pump to clear a 12 inch clutch, but the 12 inch clutch will not work with the plain M belly pump. Jim

The early Super M's (52 and some 53) still have the 2 bolt starter. I think the change over occured with the start of the Stage II Supers.

According to my parts info, they appear to be basically the same. It says that the part number is 357892 R11 for both the M and super m. and that it will work for 8026DCX or 9122DBX except that the starter has to be changed. I assume the 8026 and 9122 numbers are earlier revisions. So look at the starter mounting. I think that is the difference.

Andrew is correct, on gasoline farmall SM tractors serial # 501 to 28174 farmall works or SM 500001 to 504801 louisville tractors used the same size housing as a carbureted M. Higher than that all SM gas and diesel the same, they were 3 bolt starters. You can interchange them if a starter is used to fit.

Thanks for the info! I will be adding a Super M to my herd this weekend! It is going to look right at home next to the '60 Farmall 140 of my Grandfathers I restored last year. Thanks for the help!!!!

My '53 stage I SM has the 2 bolt starter, same as my '49 M. My '53 stage II SM (Louisville) has the 3 bolt starter, same as my SMTA.
