656 hydro governor

I have a question concerning the response of the governor on a 656 gas hydro. The engine runs nice, but when brought under load with the hydro, the governor seems to "over react", making the engine rap up several hundered RPM over the RPM I was running before coming back down again. I have other gear drive gassers, and they don"t react like that. So, does a hydro act differently? Can it be adjusted to lessen the reaction? Any help would be great.

Look for play ("slop") in the governor output lever area, the governor-to-carburetor linkage ends or the carburetor butterfly shaft.

Internal governor problems could be flat spots on the "fingers" of the governor weights that contact the thrust bearing or on the fork.

We had 2 656s when I was a kid, one gear and one hydo. A little bit of rev-up (200 RPM) is normal as the engine overcomes the "slip" of the hydo (like an automatic in a car) You might want to confirm that the hydo is not actually "slipping bad". I don't know how to work on a Hydro, just drove one some when I was younger. It will never pull the same as a gear tractor.

also...is it very cold where you are at right now? If so then the fluid in the pumps is cold and stiff. If you can, store the tractor in a heated area for a couple of days and see if it runs better. (or just wait for warm weather)
