locked up H

I have an H that I parked in November in the tractor shop. I tried to crank it the other day and it would not turn over. When i engaged the clutch it turned over and started right up. when i let off the clutch it drags the motor down and will not move. Any ideas on what is causing this. I have it parked with 2 MD"s and they are fine.

well, i wondered that, but i would have thought the M's would be froze too. I bought this H back in the summer. i put new trans lube in it. the tractor will roll but not with the engine running.

with the engine off, it will roll freely, but you have to engage the clutch for it to start and it will not roll if the engine is running, it will stall out if you let the clutch off. even if i put it in gear, it will not move. that just doesn't sound like water in the trans, what do you think?

I could well be condensation in the tranny. Doesn't take much in the oil to freeze up and cause that problem. I had that happen to a ford last winter. I pour in a couple bottle of heet which freed it up. Then I started it and let it get good and warm and then drain and refilled it and all has been good since

Sounds to me like yer shift fork has popped out of place and you have it in 2 gears at once. My father in laws H will do that if you are careful with shifting or just happen to bump the shift lever while getting on or off.

My understanding is that when you push clutch peddle with foot that disengages clutch. Taking foot off clutch peddle engages clutch. That being said you disengage clutch to start tractor(no load on engine). Engine runs with no load. Now when you engage clutch with trans in neutral does engine lug down and die? If yes trans. is locked in 2 gears. Shifting lever is worn. Take shifting tower off, look at shifting rails and put all rails in neutral with big screwdriver. If engine lugs and dies after you put trans in a gear than you could have a piece of a bearing or other debrei(sp?) stuck in 2 gears(BTDT). Is also possible frozen water intrans. Have you removed drain plug to see if oil runs out. If oil drains out no frozen water. in trans. Post back what you find or if you have more questions. Hopes this helps. Armand

(quoted from post at 08:29:12 08/26/09) Most likely your shifter lever is worn, not that hard of a fix.
There is a pin that holds the lever to the casting that needs to be removed. Some will have metal caps to keep the pin in place, some can be pried off, otherwise just drive a punch into one side and the other side will pop off.

Your shifter should look like the pic below, if not, it will need to be built up.

If the tractor will roll okay when shifter is out of gear and clutch engaged, its not in two gears. Something is keeping the transmission input shaft, lower transmission shaft or belley pump from turning. If you don't find any ice, a roller from the main shaft pilot bearing can come out and wedge between the constant mesh gears. With the clutch pedal blocked down, trans out of gear put the pto in gear and see if it can be turned backwards or back and forth to dislodge anything stuck in the gears. Would remove the front trans drain plug to make sure no ice under the constant mesh gear first. Ice most times blocks the bull gears also if its there though, then tractor wouldn't roll. Maybe drop the inspection cover under the hydraulic pump drive shaft and make sure pump shaft turns also. If easy stuff fails remove the belt pulley gear box or cover and look for the problem.
This is just guess work without inspecting what you have.

A frozen up belly pump seems like the answer to me. I haqve never seen one that had the trans freeze that the bull gears didn't. Jim
