Ok, maybe most of you already knew this, but I didn't before today.

IH tractor numbering scheme:
706-70 pto hp, 6 cyl
826-82 pto hp, 6 cyl
684-68 pto hp, 4 cyl

I never knew this

No, I assume you have to start with the 06 series, also doesn't work for the industrials and the final 88 series. But even works with the little guys. 154 lo boy, etc

There's a problem with this theory. 806 is a six cylinder, but is 95 pto h.p. and 85 drawbar. Sounds like a cool idea, though. Case IH is doing this with the magnums. MX 305 = 305 engine HP, MX 235 = 235 Engine HP, ETC.

I kinda thought the same thing. I've been poking around the net doing a little research. Some are right on the pto number, some are right on the drawbar number, some are 10-15 hp off of either number. Problem is its hard to find concrete hp numbers. Got to be somewhat right though. The last digit is spot on. 4-6-8.

Sometimes there were differences in factory rating and Nebraska test... maybe it was the "design HP" or what IH was planning... sometimes they hit their mark and sometimes not.

Thats what I'm thinking. There are too many that are too close for it to be a happy coincident. If they just threw numbers at it you would think we would have a 1386, or a 906. Maybe the tractor got numbered at its inception and IH kept the number even if engine changes were made

It is just a conicidence on some of the models. The HP really has nothing to do with the numbers. In some series, the last number does indicate the number of cylinders, ie 04, 06, 56, etc.
