Hello need a few questions answered for me.

Have a farmall M, it has a few m&w goodies on it, including pto lever, 9 speed, live hydraulics, and a schwartz wide front.

What is different about the live hydraulics rather than stock?

The cable for the 9 speed is missing the part you pull on (it is just a cable sticking out). Anywhere I could get parts for this? or should I make my own.

What type of oil are you running in these old machines, as well as fuel? 93 oct? Lead additive?

I can answer a couple of questions - M's came with a belly pump which drove from the transmision so when you pushed in the clutch to stop, so did the hydraulic pump stop. A live system is driven by gearing to the engine so its not affected by the clutch and wont stop unless the engine is shut off. As for fuel just the regular fuel from the pump with out a lead additive will do.I run mine all the time like that.

Charlie answer your first question very well. But I will add to what he said about fuel. Back in the day these old tractors where built they have farm fuel or in other wards gas not fit to use in cars and trucks and that was used in tractors. It was low octane etc. So you do not need to buy high $$ gas for your tractor and as a matter of fact the cheapest stuff you buy is way way better then what it has ran on over the years. As for the lead ya buy that lead additive and keep the snake oil dealers in business. Or in other words it does nothing for your engine other then waste your $$ leave the lead stuff on the store shelve

Parts are NOT available for M&W add-ons, unless you're really really lucky and happen to stumble across something on ebay. You'll have to make your own or disable/remove the add-on.

89 octane gas is fine for a normal M.

Lead additive is a waste of money. Even if it did work you'll never run the tractor hard enough or long enough to erode the valve seats.

Reprint owner's manuals are common as macaroni for the M. I suggest you get one for yourself to get the lubrication guide.

So what is so beneficial about having the live hydraulics now that I know what the difference is, is it better for running certain implements?
It has 2 hydraulic hookup's at the rear, but both are female end fittings; so i'm guessing this is totally different than attaching a skidloader implement where there is a male and female line for implement and machine.

As for oil, what is suggested?

Any good Hyd oil or UTF will work just fine. As for live hyds lets think about it. Say you are running a loader off of them. Do you want to stop take it out of gear then let the clutch out to lift the bucket etc. Or say your using a mower ad you need to turn around to go the other way. Do you want to have to stop lift the thing and then go again. It is nice the have hyds that work with or with out the clutch out make it so you can do more on the fly or stopped
