Super c hydraulic fluid?

I would use Hytran hydraulic oil and my manual doesn't give the quantity of hydraulic oil for any of the tractors. You could also use John Deere's Hygard hydraulic oil if there's a dealer near you. Hal

In this case, the book will only serve to confuse you. It was written in the mid 1940's when "hydraulic fluid" did not exist.

A lot of people waste a lot of time looking for "non detergent" motor oil as specified in the manual.

CaseIH HY-TRAN hydraulic fluid is what you should use. Fill the reservoir until it runs back out, and it's full.

You want to fill to to about 1/2" below the fill plug. It takes about 3 quarts of hydraulic fluid. There is not a vent in this system so if you fill it clear to the fill plug and then use it long enough to heat the fluid up it will build pressure in the unit and blow out one of the pressure plugs in the side of the unit. I did this about 5 years ago while on a tractor ride. We had been out for about an hour when it blew the plug on the right side of the unit. Had to get towed back to town. At least it was a WD-45 and not a green one.

Hmm, I've got four Touch Controls, and I always fill them right to the fill hole. Use them plenty, haven't had a problem with blowouts.

The original owners manual for my 1953 SC states to fill within 1/2" of the bottom of the fill plug opening. It lists the quantity as 6 3/4 pints for a drained system and 8 1/4 pints for a rebuilt unit. Hy-Tran is what is required and not a SAE non-detergent engine oil like in the H and M. The manual refers to the fluid as IH Touch Control Fluid in 1953 which was a name for the hydraulic fluid prior to the introduction of Hy-Tran and most likely the reason for any confusion Hal.

This really is an RTFM question. I have never seen a problem from filling the last half inch. The detail nobody mentioned is to fill the system with the arms both in the rear position. Doing otherwise will overfill it.
