Cub Gas Tank Restoration

If you have a really poor tank have it cleaned at at a radiator shop. If it is not too too bad then clean with acetone or other acid. Unless the tank is prepared 100% the tank sealer can loosen in years to come, making a real mess. If you can get by without it then do so. If not take it to a pro. You can search the archives youll find 100's of tank cleaning posts.

Rock, I have used and like the kit that Eastwoods sells 2 size's depending on tank size.

clean the tank well as Andrew said. Then if you want a sealer that is affordable and seems to do the job go with Redcoat. Its sold by the quart and is really thin so you just dump most the quart in, move the tank around until it is all covered (mainly just bottom and sides), and then let it drain out. You can capture the extra as it drains out and save for your next tank. There are many other tank sealers on the market as well.

If you are going to use redcoat...DO IT BEFORE YOU PAINT!!! If you are painting. My brother in law talked me into sealing the starter tank on SMD after I had just finished restoring. I dumped some in, swirled it around, and propped the tank upside down in a coffee can to drain overnight. Next morning there was about an 1/8 inch of redcoat in the coffee can and NO Dupont Centari left on the starter tank. I assume the fumes stripped it off.

That's a bad day! I have my MD starter tank off and I was thinking about coating it as well. The coatings get a pretty bad rap here on yt, but I think they are perfect for the way most folks use these tractors. If they were still "daily drivers" they would have full loads of fuel and not rust up. But the way we run them they may sit for a month then get used for a day then sit two more months. That is really hard on a gas tank. Also, nobody is going to fill a 20 gallon tank up to let the fuel get old. Most of these guys on the forum won't burn 20 gallons in one tractor before they die! Sorry for the rant, but it just bugs me.
