Tractor Started...

Our temp got up to a tropical +25F this afternoon with sunshine and blue skies so I put on my leather sandals, Bermuda shorts, Jimmy Buffet Hawaiian shirt then when out to plow some snow.

Point of the Post: The 300U was reluctant to start so I decided to try something I read on the forum. Someone posted that in cold weather he always turns on the ignition 5 minutes before attempting a start to give the wires a chance to “heat up”. I didn’t really understand how that would help but it had intrigued me. I turned on the ignition and went about opening the barn doors and things. I came back about 5 minutes later, hit the starter and she fired off instantly. It might have just been a coincidence or “heating the wires” might have worked. I am going to try it another time that’s for sure.

(I know some won’t read the entire post because they won’t get past the opening)

Well, if the points are open, it should do absolutely nothing as there is no closed circuit and no electrons move. If the points are closed, it will heat up the coil, for sure. Whether that makes it fire up better is beyond me.

Remember, cold wires conduct better than hot wires. Hence superconductors exist at very low temperatures, and lit bulbs have higher resistance than cold, unlit bulbs. So the only positive effect would have to be on the coil, not the wires.

what wires? probably burn the points if they are in closed position, and warm the coil. makes no sense to me anyway. AND if it was on a J.D. 2 cyl. with a pup motor , this is what burns out the coils when the switch gets forgotten to be turned off.

It is not the wire, it is the battery that will activate a little with some current flowing. I would turn lights on though, not ign but not for that long.
