L W; you posted late last week and found out it is a 240. I peeked at an IT manual and thought I would give you this info regarding the cylinder head. Quoting now: When reinstalling cylinder head...tighten the stud nuts to a torque of 65 ft.-lbs. on C123 engines prior to engine serial number 65001 and to 80-90 ft.-lbs. on C123 engines after 65000. Post back your findings/other ?'s as it may help others and welcome to the IH discussion board.

Do you or someone else know about when by date s/n 65001 was produced? I am buying a Farmall 240 which is still up north snowbound until spring but don't have access to the engine s/n and the chassis s/n dates it as a 1958 first year 240 tractor. Any info would be greatly appreciated as I see there are many changes at that s/n break noted in the TC-53B parts catalog I have. Thanks for any info, Hal.

Hal; I did a search using the tractor photos link for 240 and Mark Peters who frequents this forum (it jogged my memory that he does have a Farmall 240) and Redfarmallboy from MI have photos posted. If you use that link maybe it will show a link for you to contact them via email or post for these folks. I recall you stating you were going to add a 240 to your herd. Good luck with another piece of red iron to enjoy.

Thanks for the info and I forgot about Mark for a moment but will probably just give him a call as we talk a few times during the year. GO PACKERS and good luck to the green and yellow guys, Hal.

Jim, I was hoping you would see this thread as I knew you would have the answer. The confusion to me was that the Farmall 240 is in the same TC-53 Parts Catalog with the 200 and 230 so guess that is the reason for the split being so predominately mentioned. Thanks for your response, Hal.

If you go to the McCormick Archives at WHS, you can click on serial number lists and select Louisville. Then you can expand the list to select 57-58 to June and 57-58 June-Oct.

On the first of those pages you can see the serial and engine numbers for the last 230. On the second you can see the first 240. Some numbers are faded and hard to read. You can't find all years for all models but there is a lot there.

Thanks Jim for sharing the link to the data. You always had this stuff available but didn't know your source and it's nice that so much of the archives have been put on line to easily find data on these old tractors, Hal.

Yes My dad has a 240 but I'm afraid we're not of too much help at this time because he just bought it on auction last fall and put it in the pole barn for the winter. Working on the 340U at the moment. But if anyone has questions or needs pictures feel free to ask. Always willing to help. Thanks, Jon.

More of the archives is going online all the time. That search page is a relatively new addition. I have a photocopy of the Louisville pages that I wore dog-eared before it went online. The search page gets you to a whole world of IH information.

The large amount of the McCormick archives that is available online is directly the result of the donations from the Collectors Club. It is still the tip of the iceberg for the collection.

Jim, I was aware the archives were adding a lot of new stuff as they could. I know our Missouri IHCC chapter has been making donations for that purpose at least since the Columbia 2008 RPRU I think. Talked to Guy in Madison at the 2009 RPRU and he advised the same.
I don't have time this morning but I would like to ask you some questions on IHC Flair Box wagons and possibility about a trailer I saw in a photo you posted a year or so ago on this forum. My email is open if you care to send an email or I will just start another thread in a day or so. Thanks again for all you provide to the forum guys from the historical side of these tractors, Hal.

My 240 is a narrow front row crop Farmall model and it's on the left hand side of the clutch housing below the voltage regulator and behind the air cleaner unit. It's easily seen and if not on your tractor it's probably missing but you should be able to see the four rivet holes where is was secured. If you have an International 240U model I don't know where it would be located if not in the same location. Hope this helps, Hal.
