Which clutch do I use?

I am putting an engine from a 400 into my M. I want to use the 400 flywheel so that I can have the 12" clutch instead of the 11". Will a SM clutch/pressure plate work for this application or what am I going to need to do? Thank you.

The Liftall reservoir will not clear the 12" FW and PP. The solution is to use a late SM liftall pump, or Live hydro and a separate reservoir.
You could use the M Flywheel but I agree the 12" clutch is more likely to last. Jim

biggest thing is how hard your going to work the tractor. nowadays these old tractors dont see the work they used to. using the 11" clutch will be quite sufficient for yard work. unless its going in the old tractor pulls , then i agree that the 12" is a better option. i put a super engine a W-6 and used the 11" and its just fine.

If what janicholson posted is no problem the 400 pressure plate if good will work with a SM or real late clutch plate. May need to remove the pto drive hub from the pressure plate if theres a clearance problem.

I have a 12" clutch for a SM with a belly pump. the flywheel step is 1.406 for the 400, M and the SM so I think it should work, but I am not 100% sure.
good luck Ed

I have a 400 pressure plate that is nearly new. The belly pump and belt pulley have been removed. Could you explain in terms a rookie can understand what needs to be done to use the 400 pressure plate. Comparing the 2 of them, the M pressure plate has 3 arms that go against the throw out bearing and the 400 has a spined center. Any advice you can offer is very appreciated. If I don't have to buy a new pressure plate that would be great!

The splined center is the input for the live PTO system. It is not needed in this application. the remaining components will fit and adjust to specification with normal fitting procedure for the clutch assembly. some mixing and matching is needed.
If the belly pump is to be left out, there should be no issues. Jim

So the splined hole in the 400 pressure plate is large enough that it will slide over the M shaft and simply not use the splines at all? I'm sorry if I sound a bit dense, but want to make sure so I don't have to re-do something. Thanks again for your time and advice.

At one time IH sold the same pressure plate for 400 and SM tractors. Only difference was the splinded hub was left off the pressure plate when sold for use on a SM. You can remove the rivets and the hub from your pressure plate. Hub may clear everything if left on, but I have never tried it without removing the splined hub.

I'll grind the rivets off so I can remove that hub and give it a try today. Thanks to all for your!
