Help!! I just picked up this tractor and I have a lot of Questions: (1) I"m not sure what it is the markings have been removed but I think it"s ether a Farmall 240 or a 340 how can you tell? It is a 4 cyl with a 4 speed tran. (2) I was told that it ran fine, and it dose start and runs well one small problem is there is water in the oil and there is what appears to be a little water between the head and the block at the front of the head. I am hopping that its just the head gasket. Is there any other more common possibility. Any help is appreciated
Thanks,
Larry

240 is a 4 speed, 340 5 speed. Could be head gasket, cracked head or block, or the seals at the bottom of the sleeves, you have to at least remove the head and then go from there.

Larry, if you post a picture, someone here will identify it. Otherwise, go to the Case IH website, under parts and service, select "search for parts", then type in 240 or 340. There are pictures there.

Another good source of information is searching 240 or 340 on the IH Farmall archives here on YT.

When you got the tractor did it have "water" or coolant in the radiator? Water in the oil is a problem, same a coolant, but water freezes. Head seepage is a clue. There are some other common problems, but for now follow the clues. Hope for the best case, retorquing the head, although for the price of a head gasket, you would be better off replacing it.

Pull the spark plugs and look for coolant. Do a compression check. Then get back on here and ask more questions.
Best Regards,
Charlie

There is another thread that started yesterday:
"Farmall A: can I pull head w/out removing rockers???"
Go back and read it. It discusses the same problem with essentially the same engine.

Thanks Charlie
I re-torqued the head bolts and did the Jw stop leak and seem to be back in business. Now I can start to look for a few missing parts. It is a 240 with serial no.875 that puts as a early 1958. If I can find the side emblems and side covers it appears to be complete, so if anybody has a source for any of the parts please let me know?
Thanks for the help and info.
