Farmall H PTO troubles

Went to push some snow today and my H's pto is locked up. I took off the hydralic pump and it spins freely. Tractor will start and run with the clutch pushed in, but will stall and quit if I try to release it. Any ideas?

Do you have a splined PTO or an early one with dogs? Does the PTO engagement lever move or is it stuck? Can you disengage the PTO and let the clutch in without it stalling? If the last question is no then you may have ice in the transmission.

My first guess is that there is way too much condensation (water) in the trans/rearend, and it is frozen solid.

I also vote for ice in the tranny. If you can pull it into a warm place or use a space heater to warm the tranny up I bet your problem will go away.

Sounds like you have water in at least one place if not 2 or 3 places. One quick way to maybe get you up and going is get a few bottle of HEET and pour it into the tranny and PTO etc. Then wait an hour or so and try again. You can also cover the tractor and use some sort of heater etc to warm it up to the point the ice melts. Had that problem last winter on my Ford 841 and it took a couple hour with the HEET and a heat to free it up. Once you get it going drain and refill with good oil

I agree with the others - the rear end has a couple gallons of water where gear oil should be and it's now frozen solid. This both locks up the transmission (specifically the countershaft gear set) and freezes the PTO shifter clutch in place.

You need to warm up the rear end long enough to melt the water, then remove the rear end plug to drain it out. Be sure to refill the tranny with gear oil afterward!

just an fyi, the rear end holds about 6 gallons of oil or so, plus maybe a couple gallons of water. have 2-3 5 gallon pails handy, and get a good grip on the drain plug. found out the hard way on an m after i dropped the drain plug and only had one 5 gallon pail in reach. m hold 14 gallons.

Are you sure you arent locked in two gears mite need to remove the pin and take the shifter out so you cna see if the rails are all lined up. Tie the clutch pedal forward to see if you can push the tractor. With the clutch pedal forward you cant move the tractor the tranny is froze.

Yep, thanks for the help. As usual, you guys are right on. It got to 36 degrees yesterday and I tried to start it without the clutch pushed in and it turned over just fine. Now a trip to the farm supply store and a fluid change tonite if I can get home in time.
