Farmall 400 Diesal

I recently aquired a 400 Diesal. I am trying to get it running on gas first. I have good spark. I removed and cleaned up the carb. The problem is I don't have an operator's manual. I know the air intake from the exhaust manifold shuts off in one direction of the lever on the left side of the tractor. I also know this lever is supposed to shut off the gas from the carb at some point by forcing the needle into the seat of the carb. What I don't know is how all this works together or if I got the linkage to the carb shut off correct. Could someone tell me in detail the start on gas, run on diesal and shut down of tractor procedure and how these linkages are supposed to work together? For example, is the tractor supposed to start on gas with the flappers in the air intake closed or is this the shutdown position? Thanks alot.

Butterflys are closed are in the closed when in the gas position. You really need to get the manual for it, there are alot of linkages and connections that need to be set in order for everything to run right. A manual would really be your best bet. Very hard to expalin the whole system.

And the switch you talk about is in the intake manifold. You may need to clean and check the contacts in there. Removal of the front plate on the intake will show that. A manual would help again here.

Pull lever back, towards you to start on gas. Sometimes you have to hold them back because of wear etc. Once it is warmed up, advance throttle and push lever forward. It will sputter but hopefully take off. If it sounds like dying, pull lever back and try again after if is running on gas again.

To shut off, I always pull throttle up in the summer, but will let it run again on gas for a bit in the winter to help it start again, but always before getting off, throw the lever forward to the diesel position.

In the archives, there are some more detailed instructions.

Good Luck!
