splitting a farmall 'a', at transmission

I have an early A, no electrical, and need to replace the front transmission bearing. Can I split the tractor in front of transmission?

Simple answer is yes but it is easier to pull the engine then the torque tube because if you split it at the tranny/torque tube getting the input shaft started back into the clutch can be tricky

I have not done an A but have done similar and agree with what Rich is saying. I still split mine at the trans and then used a mirror at the inspection cover and a patient helper to move the rear end. We managed to get the input shaft back thru the center of the clutch and into the bushing. Took a little trial and error but we got it done with a few attempts. What I am trying to remember is if this is the point where you have to be careful not to hit the clutch pedal while the shaft is out to avoid getting the clutch off center. Somebody will have to clarify that for you as the brain is not working on this end, but I think it is.

Ya I just built what I call a BA. It is an A from the tranny back and a B from the tranny forward including the B torque tube. I could have built a B but the sickle bar mower I have would not fit on a B but fits on the A so I made the BA. I also did it old school and reused gaskets etc as much as I could

It's easy to pull the engine on an A. I unbolted the front wheels and steering from the engine and rolled it out as an assembly. You need to support the tractor at the drawbar since the tractor will tilt backwards when the engine is removed. The engine has dowel pins and may be difficult to remove even with the bolts out. It will be easier if you have a helper and once you get a little crack between the engine block use a big screwdriver to pry. You will need a good engine hoist to lift the engine. I marked all the wires so I knew where they belong and ended up making a
new wiring harness. Hal
PS: I used a little lubri-plate on the dowels when reinstalling the engine.

Yes, should be fairly easy to do split in front of Transmission. I've not done and A, but did do my C that way to replace the front transmission seals. I supported the front and rolled the rear part back. On the C, the rear was nearly balanced, so it did not take much to support it. Since you have an A and not a super, you don't have to worry with the hydraulics. With the C and the supers, you have to remove the hydraulic manifold to split at the clutch which is a pain. I don't recall having much trouble getting the shaft back in the clutch when I split at the transmission on my C. Just be sure to that the clutch is not disengaged during the split so you don't have to line the clutch up. I used long bolts at the split point to guide things back together and put the PTO in gear so I could turn the shaft with the PTO to help in getting it back in the clutch.

Ive done it several times but i have casters that bolt to the tractor so i can roll it apart. You need to brake line. When you get it apart enough take out the tapered bolts on the u-joint. Do this as soon as there is room that way you wont have a problem getting drive shaft back thru the clutch. Remove the pedal guard so you can unbolt the clutch and left brake pedals as they will stay with the bell housing. I can do it in less than two hrs but i do have casters to let both assys roll. Dont forget the seal also
