That never happened before!

The SAV has been sitting outside the shop waiting for it's turn for the last several months. Time to move it but it will not budge. I did enough to it to get it to start in warm weather but apparently not enough to make it a cold weather starter and it has been very cold so...not going to start.

Tried towing it but it will not budge. Brakes are off, engine is out of gear and turns over, does not appear to be frozen to ground. I don't care to drag it and maybe break something. Could it have been full of water in the rear end and maybe frozen? Had a heckuva howl back there when I test drove it which is why it has been sitting. Any ideas why it won't move? Frankly never had a tractor I couldn't move. :)

Yup, either water in the tranny or water in the final drive units. Well, I should say ice now..................................

Yep sounds like water in the trans or final drives, probably the trans as my B is like a sponge there. When my M did that I wrapped batts of fiberglass insulation around the bottom of the case and put 2 halogen work lights under it and went to work, when I got home it was thawed out and the temp was in the single digits. Also a kerosene heater with stovepipe and an elbow to direct the heat works also, but watch out for fire!

Last winter when I got my H that happened to me too. I ended up pulling the top cover and cleaning it out by hand so I could inspect the gears, but I've always heard they can be thawed with a salamander or even a pan full of hot coals/charcoal or whatever.

That, or the Hibachi underneath is an economical and effective heater if ya should have to thaw it out to move it for any reason.

Get your self a few bottle of HEET and pour it in probably 5 or so bottles. Let it sit a couple days then pull the drain plug with a pan under it of course and if your lucky it will drain out the oil and by then the heet

You dont know if its the final drive or the tranny. It wont hurt to remove the pans on the final drive to move the tractor then if its still froze thaw out the tranny. I would think the charcoal would be the best. Now you have three places that can be froze thats why id remove the two pans they need new lube anyway.

Get some windshield cleaner with the deicing agent in it.Will melt the ice fairly quickly.Drain when unfrozen and relace with fresh oil.

I appreciate the suggestions! Might have to move it just to get it out of the front yard but for a couple more weeks it's not hurting anything and we got a thaw goin on out there today. Maybe I'll see if she won't push back a few feet out of sight after a little warm up and then leave it till Spring. Got no room in the shop for her now anyway...pickup, loader tractor, Cub and 4-wheeler. Barely an inch between em.

Dave:

I was thinking along the same lines as Zachary. A Salamander or torpedo-type heater can provide the needed BTU, even outside. You'll just have to keep a watchful eye on it so you don't overdo it. But you'll want to do it right away, as the temperature is supposed to take a BIG nosedive tonight.
