IH 656 for mowing

I"m looking for a tractor to brush with my mowers. I don"t have any experience with IH/Farmall tractors so can anyone tell me if the IH 656 would be suitable for mowing with a 7" rotary mower, also would there be any problem lifting it (1320#)? What about larger mowers?

Further, was the 656 made with the European engine that I"ve heard about or is it made in the USA?

Thanks,

Gary

Worked on a farm as a kid and had 3 656 utility tractors. I ran a hydro with a 10ft mower many hours and neverhad any problems out of it. All three where very reliable and had plenty of power.

656 was a good 55 hp tractor, had good hydraulics, hitch could be 2 or 3 point, IPTO was 540 (common) or 1000 (rare), easy shifting, all had power steering. They were Farmall row crop or International utilty type. Engines were 263 IH gas or Glow Plug 282 diesel, all US made.
666/686 had same gas engines, some 291 cu in, diesel were D312 IH US made, later were D310 German IH.

I had a 656 on my diary farm. Mowed, raked, baled, spread manure, worked great for everything. deisel with t/a delete. I can only imagine how handy it would have been with a t/a. Seemed much stronger than 55hp.

If you don't already have the 7' rotary mower you might want to consider something like a 9' or 10' for a 656. I have never used a 656 but have used other tractors of similar size on a 9' Bush Hog brand model 3209 and it handles it fine. It is used for maintaining pastures clipping weeds and topping off fescue which is somethings quite thick and heavy. A Farmall 656 is on my list to acquire sometime as I think they are a nice strong 60 h.p. tractor with conveient features. Best of luck in finding you a nice 656 as it should be a good fit, Hal.

I have a 656 diesel and a 7 foot three point bushhog brush hog. It handles the mower fine, but you need weights on the front, it gets real light in the front end.

Good point on the 3 point hook-up models and carrying in the raised position. The models I have are all trailing type pinned to the drawbar with a hydraulic cylinder to raise and lower for cutting and transport, Hal.

The TA was fantastic on the 656, especially for plowing through heavy spots (high third) and ends where we tried to make the turn without hitting the clutch even when plowing with a three 16 flip over plow. I doubt the 656 would even know the 7-foot rotary mower was there.

i have a 656 with 9000 hrs on it just had it on a dyno a couple weeks ago it made 63 hp. we use it for everything
