Changes on my H

Back in the 80's I bought my 43 H from someone the family knew for a long time and I know he was the orignal owner.Last year I found out the govenor had been changed to a 3 weight govenor and the tractor had a gas manifold even though there was a starting tank on the tractor for burning distillate. Are these the type of changes someone in the 50's and 60's would have made if they were taking the tractor to a tractor pull? I know the little town he was in used to have a carniville with a tractor pull back in the 60's. I also know the tractor made several trips to the local watering hole afer his wife took the truck keys but I don't think anything was modified for that!

Those are the sort of changes someone likely made in an effort to make the old H pull a little harder in the field. I have a '43 H, and it got a gas manifold in about 1948, when it no longer was drinking distillate fuel. The governor may have been upgraded when parts needed replacement.

Your governor is a Thompson governor. They had a small shop about 10 miles from where I live now. Something like an M+W governor, but it had 4 wieghts. Thompson's products are little known away from thier home town of Cicero, IN.

My M and SM have Thompson governors! In fact, the SM was overhauled several years ago in the Thompson garage.
Where are you located? I'm west of Sheridan.

I live in Noblesville. A friend of mine in my tractor club acually worked for Thompson bros. building these governors. They did all of this while working out of nothing more than a small block building. More like a shed in my opinion. Pretty impressive huh. As late as 10 - 15 years ago one could still purchase a brand new modified gov. from them.
