I don't know if there is detergent or non-detergent oil in my newly acquired H. There are no big sludge deposits in the top end, its just dirty (understandable for a 66 year old engine). Judging by the picture, would it be safe to run detergent?

May as well adjust the valves while you got it open..017 warm engine. Warm is as in ambient on a nice summer day.
It's a low rpm (1750) little 4 banger and it will purr with a light oil like 5-30 in it, and start easy when it is cold.

Gordo

By now it has probably been running with a detergent oil in it for years since few people go out of there way to find non-detergent oil and it is getting hard to find any more

You need to drop the oil pan also. The pan is where the most of the sludge will be. Detergent oil is what you want to use regardless of what the previous owner used, and Shell-rotella or equivilant brand 15w-40 is an excellent choice. I would NOT use 5w-30 in a 60 to 70 year old tractor engine.
