i have a h with a mag will a standard 6 volt regulator work with a cut-out system. or will i have to wire it for regulator and if so does any body have a wiring diagram for a regulator with a mag thanks.

It depends on you light switch. IF you have a four position switch you need the cut out system( i think) If you look in the recent pages i just had this problem and there is a whole slew of information. But here is your diagram courtesy of John T. And the last post is named (It's charging...Sorta)

The charging system can be the same regardless if its a Mag or a battery powered coil distributor ignition.

Originally the earlier systems that had a combination 4 position LHBD (L= low charge H=high charge) light switch and charge control used the simple Cutout Relay while the later 3 position Off Bright Dim light switch only systems used a full fledged Voltage Regulator. A tractor could be be converetd from cutout and LHBD light switch charge control to a full fledged voltage regulator but you may as well keep her original to match what switch you now have.

Bob M has all the wiring diagrams available I dont have the URL link handy

You sound like you are confused you either have a regulator with your generator or the original cut-out you cant have both. Your generator should have a tag with a Delco -Remy # on it. The generator can have an adjustable third brush . I s your device mounted on the gen or somewhere else. You need to know what system you are tring to make work. Just what is the problem?

You can replace the original cutout with a voltage regulator. In fact it is recommended - the battery will be better maintained (and usually will last longer) when a voltage regulator is used.

The diagram in the link is how to wire a VR on H. Since you have a magneto you will simply omit the wiring to the ignition switch/coil.

If you still are using the high low charge positions on the light switch and just need a cutout, you can just use that portion of the voltage regulator, Arm term and Batt Terminal. Fact of the matter is that the generator that is made for high low charge control runs a lot more amperage through the field coils and voltage regulators do not like that much current flowing through the points of the regulator portion. Just food for thought.
