I recently acquired a tall gas cap that was on an H and put it on my H. I like it much better, and it made me wonder what the history of the tall cap is. Was it standard on some models or years or was it a factory option? Was it even made by IH or was it an aftermarket thing? Thank you very much for any information. I'm sorry, I know this question is fairly silly but I'd like to find out about it.

it was a saftey thing the tall caps have two sets of tangs offset by 90 degrees and can not shoot off the top if the gasoline expands too much was the reason for the switch I believe. I was told a couple years ago that you can still take the short caps back to International and they will exchange them for the tall ones. But I have not tried it.

Contary to whay most think the tall gas caps were available from IH back in fiftys we had them on all our tractors (still have one on my M) the early tall caps were identical to the short type excepf for height. The caps that are offered for free with dual vent holes came latter, do not know just when.

Don't know about saftey, but the first type tall cap is easy to take off and put back compared to the last design. Unless the saftey catch ears are cut off.

(quoted from post at 11:29:43 01/16/11) See on the link posted by Challenger that the safety gas caps were first offered in 1980.

Don't know where you saw that 1980 thing, but the tall, triple baffled caps have been available at least since the mid fifties. I think they were standard issue on the 300s and 400s.

From the official IH order form for the new safety gas caps...."A new style gas cap first available in 1980 has a special design feature to reduce vapor build up and fuel eruption due to improper removal of gas cap". The talL caps available from IH in fiftys were identical to short caps except for height, like I said before we had them on our tractors in fiftys and I still have one on my M.

That's very interesting. My cap looks pretty old and it only has one set of tangs, so I think it must be the older kind.

I've got 4 of the new caps that I haven't used yet, and yes, they do have 4 tangs, but it looks like only 2 of the tangs are going to actually be engaged into the lip of the tank. I'm kind of curious now to know if the new caps will actually fit? Has anyone actually installed one?

I have a new one that I use on my F30 when I take it on tractor rides. It works/fits like a charm. I have the original that I use at shows but it leaks on the rides so I got the new one.

The 1954 SC Dad bought [u:f5882bfc68]new[/u:f5882bfc68] in Feb or Mar of '56 had a tall gas cap on it, so they were available at that time. My 240U had a tall cap, but it was on the list of tractors that required the new tall cap, so I ordered a new one by mail. I can't tell the difference externally, except for the black paint and the new one does not fit as good (probably made in China).

rustyfarmall. yes I got one for my 44 H as I did have the "tall one " on it and the NEWER ONE dose fit nicely like a rad. cap 1/4 -1/2 turn then a 1/4 or so more and its on

I do not have the URL for the replacement site but you should be able to type in IH Gas Cap Replacement and find the correct site. I received six of them this past summer (2010) for some of my tractors. All you have to do is give them the serial number of each tractor. At least that is all I had to do and they arrived in the mail. Black in color but they can, obviously, be painted.

Has anyone actually installed one?

The caps are not new. The design is 30 years old, and tens of thousands of them have been distributed through IH's (now Navistar's) gas cap replacement program. Not to mention the thousands people bought off the shelf at the dealer.

We've had them on all our IH gas tractors since the recall began in 1980. Got several more when this tractor collecting thing got out of hand... They fit fine.

It's quite impressive that IH used the same fuel filler neck design from 1939 up through 1979 on some tractors.
