Farmall H - 5th gear only???

Hey guys! Found a nice H for sale but the guy says it only has 5th gear. Have not had a chance to look closer or drive it. Any ideas what might be wrong? Or what I can check to see what might be wrong? Thanks!!!

5th gear is direct drive where the input transmission shaft is direct coupled to the rear shaft that drives the differential. The bottom shaft in the transmission has all the other gears that drive the rear shaft. So...it's likely that the constant mesh input gears that drive the lower shaft are stripped. If it is the input gear at the top, it's not a huge job to change that. To find out for sure what is wrong, you will have to pull the transmission cover.

Is it stuck in 5th gear? if so bottom of shifter rod may be wore off and slipping out of shifter rail. you can pull shifter out and see if it forward. 4th and 5th is on the left in side transmission.. if this is problem i have welded up the bottom of shifter and ground it back to spec on a couple before... hopes this helps

Could be a early H with 5th gear locked out.All Hs had 5 gears forward as far as I know,Unless one of your gears is stripped out.Hs with steel wheels had 5th gear locked out

Farmall Green has a good point. It could also be a problem with the shifter rails. You can determine that by pulling the shift lever out. There is a pin that holds the lever in. Once it's out, you can see the shifter rails and move them to see if you can get it in another gear besides 5th. Also, you can try putting the PTO in gear. Then try to turn the PTO by hand with the tractor engine not running. If you can turn the PTO while it's in gear, then there is a problem with the constant mesh gears at the front of the tranny.

Like farmallgreen said, find out if it is stuck in 5th. You can pull the shifter straight up and out, and then move the rails around with a long screwdriver/rod. I doubt it only has a 5th gear.

A quick check to determine whether constant mesh gearset has failed: Engage the PTO then let out the clutch with the gear shift lever in neutral.

If the PTO shaft spins normally, the constant mesh gears/lower tranny shaft are OK.

Most of the transmission gears can be seen by removing the belt pulley attachment or blank cover if it has not pulley attachment. The constant mesh gears are right below the opening.

Ask the guy what happens if he shifts it into any other gear.

If it stalls, it's stuck in 5th and it's an easy fix. Described above.

The real question at that point is, how to deal with the guy. You can tell him how to fix it, but then he may decide the tractor is now worth a lot more because it doesn't have major transmission problems...

Is he pricing the tractor as if it has major transmission problems?
