Farmall H Issue

Need some help/advice from the experts here. My H will not start. It cranks over good, even in the 5 degree weather we've had, but it will not fire and start and I get quite a bit of gas running out the carb as well. I don't believe it's flodding as I have turned the gas off and tried to cycle it through. I have done the following so far:
1. I pulled a spark plug and am getting a spark, i'm going to replace them though, they are old.
2. The points had been previously replaced with electronic ignition back in the summer.
3. I drained the carb out and tried to start.

Things I plan to check next.
1. Timing and make sure everything lines up right.

Anything I am missing or any suggestions to check? I'm pretty frustrated so any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

If its not a timing issue its probally not getting gas to the plugs, main jet stuck or gas gummed up bad,or flooded even though you believe its not it doesnt take much gas to caues this

You've got fuel and spark?

Give it a compression test. The third ingredient of the magic triangle is compression. It can't run without wind.

Pull the air cleaner hose so you can get your hand over the air inlet on the carb. When the engine is turned over you should have strong suction?? Gas running out of a carb means nothing if its not sucked up into the cyls! Bud.

If the spark plug you removed was wet it is getting fuel. If not, not.
Remove the main jet and blow it out or use a small wire to remove any crud.

give it a pull, and save your frustration . thats usually what it takes when flooded , as you say it has spark.

With the air cleaner off, try a very, very small shot of starting fluid. If it kicks, it"s a gas problem. If it doesn"t it"s a spark problem. Sounds like you might have an icing problem in the carb, or a spark timing problem.

If it ran ok the last time you used it, the timing didn't change just sitting there. I think you flooded it with too much choking. If the plugs are old, get new ones in it & try again without useing the choke until it is turning over good . On a cold start the battery voltage gets too low to give a good spark as the starter has to work too hard. May need a pull start. Leave the timing alone.

I noticed that you said you put an electronic ignition in this tractor, Is it still on 6 or 12 volt? It could be that the battery is alittle low and drawing to much power to put a good spark to the plugs, that ignition runs off battery voltage and requires a good battery when the engine cranks hard. Just give her a tug i bet she ll fire right up.

How old is your gasoline? With today's gasoline the light ends evaporate off rather quickly in an unsealed system like your H. If may run fine after it is started but will not vaporize enough to get it started.

I had similar issues with my H for several years. Even in the summer, I had to pull start it. Once the engine was warm, it would restart OK and seemed to run alright. I finally checked the valve clearances and adjusted them. It made a world of difference not only in starting, but also she makes a bit more power.

Finally got it to run Saturday morning rather rough but was able to get spreader unhooked and pulled into the garage where there was heat and light to work on it. I had put new plugs in and that helped. took carb off and the little plunger ball on the float was sticking. Thanks for advice and info.
