Weight of the TA section

I'm thinking ahead to a future project where I may have to do a TA on something like a 460 or 560.

Would the TA section out of one of these tractors be too heavy for my Super A with 1000 loader to lift?

Rather than buy (and store) a shop crane that I'm only going to use for a few minutes, I could just reach in over the side with the little loader and pluck that TA section out, if it's not too heavy.

I just took the center section out of my 450 about a month ago. It weights alot more then you would think considering its size. With me and my father (both of us are bigger guys) it took all we had to pick up one side and move it a few inches at a time. I would say its in the 500-700 lb range. Your Super A should beble to pick that. Its more awakward then heavy really. Getting it back it was fun...

If your doing a TA your going to need a floor jack with a transmission stand on it to take it out and especially when you put it back in. You have to be careful with the bearing when it goes into the trans/rear. Harbor freight has them pretty cheap. The tractor you have will probably pick it up if your going to send it out.

Anyone see the program on tv Gold Rush?? Anyone think about why the bunch of idiots sent all that equipment to Alaska and only took what looked to be 1 proof coil junk quality chain?? Before everyone runs off to hb fright to buy the cheapest, give your rigging some thought! Bud.

500-700lbs? Hmm, I was thinking 400lbs was about the limit for the Super A's front end, considering the weight of the loader.

I like the idea of the transmission cradle, though. Transmission cradle will do the job and is easier to store.

The old guy is a hoot on that show, "No guts no gloreeeeeeee!" Can't stand his son, though, acting like Mr. Big Shot and bullying the clueless real estate guy all the time.

Just weld up a frame for your regular jack. You could just make a angle iron frame and then mount it to the pin in the center of the jack.

Most floor jacks can do 3000-6000 lbs. The only issue is being top heavy. If you are working on smooth concrete, I'd fab a cradle for a floor jack to position the TA chunk. The two times I pulled the TA chunk off my 504, I used a chain hoist on an I-Beam. As for the SA lifting it, I'd say no problems.

Good luck,

I think you can rent cherry picker type engine cranes in most major centers. You could maybe rent one to get the ta out and onto a bench then rent it again to put things back together.
