Serial numbers Super C

Other then the side of the seat base is the serial number anywhere else on the tractor? Reason, I have two Super C s both serial numbers show that they are 1953 models 165550 and 175164. They have different type hydraulic units and different differential housings. My buddy has a 1951 model and later 53 of mine matches his. I m thinking that the numbers (seat base) have been changed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Joe

The hydraulic unit and the differential housing have casting codes. They will help in determining the year they were made. U and W are 1951, X is 1952, and Y is 1953.

What do you mean by different hydraulic systems? Can you post photos? Are you possibility talking about one having the 2 pt. fast hitch and one not? If that is the difference the fast hitch was an option that was introduced in 1953 as an option. A lot of Super C's in that time frame and later had that style of hitch. They could also be retrofitted back onto the earlier SC's. Along with the fast hitch on the rear of the tractor there was a remote auxillary hydraulic valve which mounted on the right side of the touch control hydraulic unit with a lever on the light bar to work the hitch up and down. That serial no. tag on the seat base is the only place you will find the unit chassis s/n. The motor s/n will not be the same as the chassis. Hope there might be something to help your understanding here, Hal.

Both tractors are fast hitch, the earlier one has a bolt on cover on the hyd unit where the front clip to hold the fast hitch release rod is mounted. I am going to get pic and post them, well I will have to get my girlfriend to do it. I m good with nuts and bolts but this puter stuff leaves me in the past. This is my 1st tractor restore and I m new to farmalls and only know little bout JD S. been operating heavy equip since early 70 s. Thanks for the help I m sure you will hear from me on other issues, Thanks Joe

As Hal said, the serial number of the engine won't match the serial number of the chassis but is should be in the ball park. As Hendrik said the casting date codes should be the closest. There can be differences in these dates but they should also be close.

hope these are the right numbers.
serial# 165550 J
REAR# 355986 R1
MOTOR# 354898 R2
HYD# 357657 RI

SERIAL# 175164 J
REAR# 355986 RI
MOTOR# 354898 R3
HYD# 354352 R2
Hope these are the right numbers seems to me they might be the part numbers. the rear housing numbers were in different locations on the two units. I m gonna need a phone number my fingers are starting to bleed from all the typing. Batteries went dead in camera (GO figure 3 weeks after x-mas grandson got all the AA batteries) need to go to store for more! THANKS JOE

Joe, I sent you an email but neither of those hydraulic unit part no's. are listed in my Super C part catalog or in my Farmall 200, 230 & 240 one either. This will be interesting and please keep us informed as this plays out as there is going to be some learnings for several of us, Hal

Except for the unit serial number, those are all part numbers. Go back and look for date codes, cast in codes that look like (*1.14.Y*). Also, look for the engine sequence number, stamped into the block below #1 spark plug.

The hydraulic part numbers can be found in the online CaseIH Super C catalog (in descriptions).

Hydraulics on the Super C fall into 3 serial number groups.
type 1: 100,001 - 138,891
type 2: 138,892 - 191,866
type 3: 191,867 and up

Your tractors should both be type 2. Your buddy's tractor type 1.

354352Rx appears to be the original block for type 1. I'm not sure, it may have been original in type 2. 357657Rx is a number for type 3. I don't know if it is original or a replacement number.

Bottom line, the hydraulics on your earlier tractor are newer than the serial number. The part number of the earlier engine is earlier than your later tractor's engine. So the engine and serial number probably match. It appreas that your earlier tractor has simply had the hydraulic system replaced.

Date codes will probably tell you if more has been changed than the hydraulics.

Don't go off and use the type 1, 2, 3 designations in some other conversation. Nobody will know what you are refering to! I used those terms only to make this post more clear.

HERE ARE THE DATE STAMPINGS
SERIAL 16550
MOTOR 11 30 Y
HYD 2 27 Y
CENTER 2 18 Y
REAR 2 21 Y
SERIAL 175164
MOTOR 1 15 Z UNDER NUMBER 1 PLUG 3021
HYD 8 9 W
CENTER 6 16 Y
REAR 5 8 Y

That explains a lot. Both tractors have had some parts swaps.

Serial 165550 was built 3/53. So all these date codes: HYD 2 27 Y, CENTER 2 18 Y, REAR 2 21 Y (all in February) fit. However, MOTOR 11 30 Y was cast the following November. At SOME POINT the engine (at least the block) has been replaced.

Serial 175164 was built 6/53. Both of these date codes: CENTER 6 16 Y, REAR 5 8 Y (June and May) are reasonable. However, MOTOR 1 15 Z was cast the following January. Same deal as your earlier tractor. Your engine number (3021) only makes sense if you missed a couple digits. Sometimes they aren't stamped to heavily and can be easy to miss. Given the date code, the whole number might be 203021, which would have been assembled about March or April.

The date code of HYD 8 9 W dates back to August 1951. It is unlikely that it sat in a corner of the factory for nearly 2 years before it got bolted to a tractor. So it was probably put on your tractor as a used unit at some later date.
