Power Steering for a W6 or W9

I am in need of pictures of the factory power steering set up on a w6 or a w9. Back in the 80"s I purchased a w6 with factory power steering. I took off the cylinder...and now can"t remember how it was attached to the tractor. Any help would be so appreciated.

i havent seen a factory power steering for the 6 or 9 series, but char lynn had an aftermarket set up that used an assist cylinder. i have that set up on my w-9.

W-400

The W-400 should have a hydraulic assisted drag link like the others. I have opted to go with hydrostatic steering and four port "hand pump". It will be used with a double ended cylinder running in place of the axle tie-rod. It was purchased new from Surplus Center for less than $100.

BTW, IH power steering was not available until the 300-400-600. Could be had on row crops, utilities, and standards but all used different designs. You might find a parts drawing at the link below but I doubt it. Some of the standard tread tractors are not included on that site. Try looking for the W-450 system.

there was also an aftermarket torque generator system that replaced the stock steering column and box on a 9-series. or maybe it bolted onto the box. can't remember. i think it was char-lynn as well. kinda rare and quite pricey. saw one on ebay last year. went over $650 i think.

that's a nice lookin setup Wardner. you should post a complete pic of this 400 soon. it sounds like it's getting pretty interesting.

Rod,

My browser won't open your link. Don't know if it is your fault or mine. Can you just copy it and place it as text in a new post.

Brad,

I haven't worked on it for many weeks. I suffered a nasty splinter that got infected and required hand surgery. I'm better now but waiting for nicer weather. 24" of snow today didn't help. No warmer weather for at least a week, possibly more.

Wardner, nice job on the W-400. I bet the hydro steering turn like a JD 4020 and with 1 finger. You know I like Surplus Center and I like projects. I have toyed with the idea of doing this to my F-504. I may email you for some details on the hydro steering project.

Enjoyed!

Charles,

I put PS on my 504 but don't have any pictures. I coupled a torque generator to the input steering shaft in the bolster. Works well. IH used the same TG but put it under the steering wheel. The TG is inside the steering support aluminum casting. That looked like a lousy placement because it stresses the three u-joints in the steering linkage.

IH also used a two port hydrostatic "hand pump" in another system. The pilot valve and flow divider were mounted near the right side of bell housing. That system might have only been used on 2504 but I am not sure. Both systems should be shown in the on-line parts book at the link below.

Picture is the cylinder on the W-400.

Currently my F-504 has the Char-Lynn TG under the steering wheel. The steering shafts and u-joints (3 or 4) are worn. My shaft binds up at times. I have a complete shaft assy from a donor tractor, but would rather do a hydro setup since it is my loader tractor.

Thanks for the input and hope that splinter infection gets better.
