How many shop hours do you think is proper to do an in-frame OH on a 263 gas engine? We have a young man starting up a repair shop locally and I know he has the knowlege and experiance to do the work, he just can't seem to figure out how to quote the labor. I'd like to send him some work if I can keep his hours reasonable. Does CIH have "book hours" to do OH like GM used to put in thier shop books? What would be a good figure to use?

I believe one exists. If I'm not mistaken I've got an I&T flat rate manual out in the shop somewhere. Depends on the definition of overhaul. Is he doing the head himself or sending it out? I used to just quote a flat rate that I thought I could live with and made a list of what it did and didnt include. Obviously, any surprises would cost additional.

I understand about suprizes and I'm not trying to hide anyting from him. If we open it up and it's worse than I think, we'll regroup from there. We'll send the head out to the machine shop to be done, so basically he'll be popping the sleeves out and puttting in new sleeves and pistons and bearings and putting it back together. Probably have the machine shop press the wrist pins too. I'm just concerned if I leave it open too much, he could wrap up some significant hours more than really nessesary.

I'd liek to help him learn this part of the business, he should have paid attention to the bid time vs. his actual time more when he was working at the dealership.

The last 560 gas I did was approx 5 years ago and I charged $1200.00 for labor. He was happy and I was happy. This is only a guess, but I would think for a straightforward inframe like you are suggesting the book is going to give a man somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 hrs. That said, there is still travel time to and from the machine shop.
