Farmall H lights and light switch

Is it correct that the H's 4 way switches were pre-regulator, and they were to adjust the charging rate?

Not that I'm converted to 12volts, and alternator with internal regulator I might as well convert to a 3 way switch.

What are the 3 settings on the 3 way, bright, dim, off?

From factory, how was the rear facing light managed, is it always on when the front lights are on? Does it dim and brighten with the front light? Originally could you turn off the rear light and keep the front lights on?

On my H i have off, dim, and bright. The rear light does dim and brighten with the front lights. On my SM, it only has one brightness setting, but I can turn on both the front and rear lights, or just the rear light by itself. I believe originally all the lights operated together. I personally never use the dim setting on my H. Bright isn't all that bright. Shawn

You can use the four positon switch no problem. When converting to 12 volt with either generator and regulator or alternator with internal regulator the low positon on switch will just not be used. The rear light should not be hooked through the dimmer coil on switch, only the head lights. Rear light should have a selector switch to have white or red right at the light. There were a couple different ways they did that but with same results. Over the years it is hard to tell how they got hooked up, if they turned the switch and lights came on it was considered, well, hey they work.

(quoted from post at 10:09:24 01/12/11) The rear light was originally more than just a 3rd headlight? It had a red bulb and white bulb?

The rear light with the small red bulb inside was optional. There was also a rear light with a small "bullet" shaped light mounted piggyback on top, which was also optional. The standard rear light was the same as the front lights, except it MAY have had a different lens.

My Dad had a H & a M, both bought new. The H was a dual fuel and I don't rember whether the M was or not. All 3 lights operated on the main switch. The rear light was the same as the head lights, no red bulb. I have a '48 H with the 4 way switch. The rear light is the same as the headlights and operates on the same switch. However, I don't know whether or not the rear light has been changed but I doubt if it has.

Both switches (3 position, and 4 position) allow the headlights to be dimmed, the rear light will remain bright (or red if setup to have that option) If the rear light dims, it is not wired to the rear light terminal. Jim

Ok, from what I am understanding, the rear light turns on & off with the front light and is not controlled independently. It seems to me there would be times when you want the front lights on but not the rear.

Kind of thought I had said the rear light was a combination red and white with a seperate switch right on the light. Some had the red light on top of white light, some had it internal with red light bulb behind white light. All operated through the one light switch but no dim on rear light.

You are correct the gens out-put could also be changed by moving the third brush to sui9t your needs with the cut-out. When running a mag there was no battery drain when the motor was running so you only needed a battery when starting. With things in shapr the motor would start easy thus not needing a verry hi rate of charge.

To the best of my memory our 350U had a rear light that was switched between red (small bulb) white brightish), or off. Jim

You got it!

From the factory both the 4- and 3-position light switches cause the rear light to burn bright in both the D and B positions. IE the "dim" switch setting only dims the front lights.

So unless an auxiliary shutoff switch is added in the line to the rear light, it cannot be shut off independently of the front lights.

The rear light was a work light. It is pointed down from the tractor or on the implement behind. It was never intended to see where you have been so it was on with the headlights.
