784 TA Issues

My 784 has a TA. Im pretty sure this is what is causing my issue but i want to make sure and try to understand how it all works so i know what i am doing when i work on it. the tractor seems to be slipping out of gear or not engaging the gear when under a good load and only under the high ta. if i have it in low ta it works fine. i have split a couple tractors for clutch issues but have no idea what im doing when it comes to a ta, how much different is it and can i replace just a couple parts of the ta or the whole thing? any info will be a great help. plowing the snow with it like this is a pain. thanks.

You've got a rare animal on your hands there. I don't think many '84 series tractors had TAs. You'd normally see more replies for a TA question by now.

The '84 series is based off the British Utility tractors, not the American Farmalls. In fact, I think they were manufactured in Doncaster.

They have nothing in common with either family of TA-equipped Farmall tractors. Those are the tractors based off the Super MTA design, and the tractors based off the 706/806 design.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the TA was added to the '84 series late in production.

Hopefully one of the IH mechanics that frequents this board comes along and has some input.

would you look at that, it was made in england. never noticed that before. i do know the tractor is a '80 model year. my father and grandfather bought it brand new in '82. thanks for the info so far. didnt realise it was that rare or different.

Wow, and nobody else has any more concrete information yet.

There's a parts breakdown of the TA at caseih.com under "search for parts". Their online parts search is a little confusing to get to the first time.

It certainly doesn't look like any TA mechanism I've ever seen. Looks more like an automatic transmission. Lots of clutches and friction disks.

You might be able to simply replace the clutches and friction disks to bring it back up to snuff... I'm just guessing here.

Hi, the 74/84/95/32XX Series were all built in Doncaster UK and Diesel engines build in Neuss Germany. The units sold in USA were shipped in parts and assembled in USA using some different parts than UK built ones. One big differences was USA had Delco electrical system and UK had Lucas electrics. In Canada the tractors were fully assembled but with Canadian safety requirements. The tractors could be ordered with either T/A or Fast Reverse as an option.

Direct drive (HI) is a hydraulic clutch pack and in LO is a mechanical sprag clutch with a friction clutch prevents free wheeling. There is a small hydraulic pump that runs off the PTO shaft and is fed by the hydraulic oil cooler return line, that is used to power the hydraulic clutch pack for the direct drive (HI). There is a pressure check and adjustment on the output of this hydraulic pump.
