Another electrical question on this M

Bob M's diagram #5 on 12 volt conversions says it is for Supers but for a straight M I need to confirm the connections on the starter button. From the pos battery to one side of the button, from the other side of the button to the starter, and then a jumper wire goes to the negative side of the ammeter gauge from which side of the starter button; battery side or not?

OK, so far so good but why will this thing not shut off with the switch. I have to shut off the gas to do so. I have followed Bob M's #5 diagram to the point shy of putting in the diode(found it at Radio Shack)?

Without the diode, or a simple switch in thet location, it will not shut off. Diode with band end toward Alternator. Jim
