what would be the most common problem that a 560 would pop out of 4th when it is under a full load when pulling a sled

If your shift lever feels like it has good detent when shifting into fourth you can forget about broken spring under shift rail which would be a low cost repair. I would definetly take a peek through the belt pulley cover to see if the bearing on upper shaft is bad. Could be the pilot brg. One thing for sure, if it keeps jumping out it wears a pattern on gears and you will not be able to keep it in gear without replacing the gear.

Pete described my H and 5th gear pretty well. They are the same setup on a different scale as your 560. Broken spring, but FIL just kept holding it in gear and eventually it tore out the gears. 20 years later I popped the top and replaced the spring and the gear bc he was too lazy to just to the spring...with that said the job is a PITA and it takes many hours and gaskets. Not hard at all, but it does take time.

You could always use the bungee strap method

If you need to repair inside the transmission and you need the speed and have the power. May consider putting the ring and pinion from International 560 or farmall 400, 450 or W400, 450. Maybe then you could pull in a lower transmission gear thats stronger than the 4th gear. Farmall 560 Pinion gear-15 teeth, Ring gear-49 teeth = 3.26 to 1. Farmall SMTA,400, 450 P-19, R-50 = 2.63 to 1.
W 400, 450 P-19, R-47= 2.47 to 1.
International 560 P-16. R-49 = 3.06 to 1. There's some other gears but the tractors are not common enough to find the parts from. Don't know which 4th gear ratio your 560 has. there was a option.

i have the 450 ring and pinion and jumped out about 5 times and will not go in 4th or 5th. like a wall there 3rd pulls good but to slow. pulling to top off tuesday. here is a link to the pull but track was soft.

(quoted from post at 16:00:03 01/10/11) thanks for the reply. is the gear in front of the trans replacable with a faster one.
NICE TRACTOR!

You have been in this long enough to know that your only limit is money!!! You could always get a new gear cut for either end of the trans.
