Still looking for imput I have 100 that the middle rail/fork will jump off gear. Reverse is fine 3rd and 4th are fine. But 1st and 2nd jamb
I have pulled cover and put the fork back on and it works for a while than screws up again. I and thinking the fork is bent and if I replace it it would be fine? Or could I heat the existing and bend it a little. Anyone have any imput? has this ever happen to you. Thanks oldiron29

Bending it back is free. Just make sure the rebend is even so it pushes straight. The top is easy to remove, so I say go for it. Jim

Jim, I just wanted to be sure heat and bending would not break it off. I am with you free is good. oldiron29

The question I have is is the shift rod end bent or warn? I saw one that had worn off the corner and every time you would try to put it in gear, as soon as the shift bar reached its position the shifter would slide out of the notch and the next ting you knew you tried to shift it and you ended up in two gears at the same time and the only way to fix it was to pull the cover and get everything in neutral again. What Gramps did was build it up with a welder and grind it back to shape and the correct size. I only say this because I never saw one bent down there. Up on the outside, yes but not in the transmission and I would hate to see someone bend it while trying to fix it and cause trouble in the other gears and shafts. LarryT

Larry T, You got it! this is what is going on! I didn't no what part was causing it. When I get time I will pull it apart. and see what I can do. oldiron29

Make sure that te shifter guide rails are okay. I had one that had a crack inside near the cover palte which would allow the shifter to jump. Replaced tht guide (I think it was the rear one) and it has been fine since (probably 40 years).

While you are at it, check whether the detent springs and balls (poppets?) of that shifter rail are in good working order. If the shifter rail is not held in place, only some friction will keep it from moving (moving out of gear, Murphy's Law...)
HTH, Hendrik.

That is a very astute observation and a right on post in my opinion. I was going to mention that the detente lock should also be checked so that they were firmly holding the shafts in place. But that is a right no post. LarryT
